Complete, authoritative and user friendly

Since 1977, A. J. McClane's The Encyclopedia of Fish and Cookery has been my go to reference on all matters of fish cookery. I learned a lot of classic fish stuff from the text and photos in that book. Though somewhat dated now, it remains a significant and lasting contribution to the literature. If you come upon one at a book sale, get it. Then along came James Peterson's Fish & Shellfish in 1996. It too is rather complete, but its not as much fun to read or page through.

Like Fish & Shellfish, this book is organized by cooking methods--baked, braised, broiled, steamed, grilled, fried and sauteed. Within these headings the recipes are presented in a rough order of difficulty: from Sauteed Trout to Soft Shell Crab Saltimbooco; from New Jersey Baked Fish to Crab Stuffed Roasted Lobster. Every market fish and shellfish has a recipe here. Classics such as ceviche, shrimp cocktail, poached salmon, dover sole and gravlax are included. Pollinger imparts each recipe with his own "ands" and "withs." Thus we have with "oyster mushrooms, creme fraiche and tarragon--coconut, lime and mint--mustardy celery root salad--red miso broth--pea shoots, sugar snaps, walnuts and orange vinaigrette." Pollinger's ands and withs make the book! He has also added many personnal-based tutorials, tips and preferences. Great photos too. With all this, the experienced home cook should have little difficulty putting any of these recipes together.

In all, these are the most inviting recipes I've seen in a cookbook in years. I know fish but I can't wait to get into Pollinger's recipes. School of Fish is a complete, authoritative and user friendly cookbook inspired by a chef who really knows fish. It will be the new reference on home fish cookery.

This book is amazing! I've made 5 recipe from it so far ...

This book is amazing! I've made 5 recipe from it so far and each one has resulted in a delicious meal. Although I am not in an area where I have a fresh fish market, what I am able to get from the grocery store has worked exceptionally well with the recipe. I can't even imagine how much more pleasing our meals would be if I could get the freshest of fresh fish.
As for Chef Pollinger, he knows how to present the recipe for even the "faint of heart" when it comes to cooking fish. I was able to correspond with Chef during a recent visit to NYC and he is very willing to answer any and all questions when it comes to fish menus. Buy this book. It will become your favorite cookbook in your collection.

Brilliant!

We are always looking for new fish and seafood recipes, and school of fish is absolutely brilliant. General Tsoa's lobster, steamed clams with red miso broth, Avgolemono braised monkish are amazing take offs and reinterpretations of classic recipes, only with seafood. Too fancy? there is a section on fried food, calamari, clams, scallops, fish and chips.

The book starts with tutorials on how to buy and store fish

Appetizers, salads, pasta, and rice
soups and chowders
baked and roasted fish

There are many beautiful mouthwatering pictures of the recipes, though every recipe doesn't have a picture.

Recipes range from fancy, to weeknight suppers like baked halibut with 10 minute ratatouille.

The recipe has a little introduction, then the ingredients are listed in blue, then the directions which are well laid out and easy to follow. I am not always a fan of colored ink, many times it is to hard to read, but in the hardcover it's not an issue at all.

Some recipes require a little more explanation, perhaps a technique or ingredient, so at the end of some recipes are notes called Kitchen notebook, Extra credit, or equip yourself. This isn't a negative, but it is worthwhile to read through the entire recipe to see if there is anything extra that would be helpful before starting to cook.

This is a simply fabulous cookbook, I am incredibly inspired by the recipes and ideas.

About the Author
Eugene R. Wittkopf was the R. Downs Poindexter Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University (LSU). He also held appointments at the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina. He received his doctorate from The Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He published more than thirty books on international politics and foreign policy and several dozen refereed articles in professional journals and chapters in books. He held offices in professional associations and served on the editorial boards of numerous profession journals. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Foreign Policy Section of the International Studies Association. Earlier, Professor Wittkopf was named the 1996 Distinguished Research Master of Arts, Humanities, and Social Studies at Louisiana State University. This is the highest award given by the LSU in recognition of faculty contributions to research and scholarship.

Charles W. Kegley is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. A past President of the International Studies Association, Kegley holds the title of Pearce Distinguished Professor of International Relations Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. A graduate of the American University (B.A.) and Syracuse University (Ph.D.) and a Pew Faculty Fellow at Harvard University, Kegley previously served on the faculty at Georgetown University, and has held visiting professorships at the University of Texas, Rutgers University, the People's University of China, and the Institute Universitaire de Hautes �tudes Internationales Et du Developpement in Geneva Switzerland. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the International Studies Association. A founding partner of Kegley International, Inc. (a publishing, research, and consulting foundation), Kegley has authored more than 50 scholarly books (and over 100 articles in journals), including co-authorship with Gregory A. Raymond for Cengage of five editions of The Global Future, as well as with Eugene R. Wittkopf seven editions of American Foreign Policy: Pattern and Process.

James M. Scott is Herman Brown Chair and Professor of Political Science at Texas Christian University. His areas of specialization include foreign policy analysis and international relations, with particular emphasis on U.S. foreign policymaking and the domestic sources of foreign policy. He is author or editor of seven books (including this one), and over 60 articles, book chapters, review essays, and other publications. He has been conference organizer and president of both the Foreign Policy Analysis section of the International Studies Association, and the Midwest region of the International Studies Association. He has also been a two-time winner of the Klingberg Award for Outstanding Faculty Paper at the ISA Midwest Annual Meeting. Since 1996 he has received over two dozen awards from students and peers for his outstanding teaching and research, including his institution's highest awards for scholarship (2000 and 2001), teaching (2002) and research mentoring (2002). He directed the Democracy Interdependence and World Politics Summer Research Program, a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates, from 2005-2014, and he is currently an associate editor of FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS. In 2012, he received the Quincy Wright Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Studies Association - Midwest for outstanding scholarship and service.

Mediocre text tangled in webs of double-talk.

To start, I have read every page of this text from front to back. Although I am not a student of the political sciences, as a Molecular Biologist I have read more than my fair share of dry texts; this book however, takes the cake.

This book turns an exciting subject into a tedious examination of 'trends' without conclusions. More dry than engaging, the authors consistently contradict themselves, even in the space of two pages. Wittkopf et al's claim that American foreign policy arises from 'Funnel of Casuality' early on within the text and wallow in 'doubletalk' throughout the rest of the book, rarely if ever committing themselves to a strong conclusion.

As a student, I am appalled by the authors refusal to provide key lessons and distinct arguments, if I needed a discussion that raised multiple difficult points and then provided 'wishy-washy' analysis I would have looked to one of the many friendly but inept potheads that typically surrounded my college campus.

Patrick Lai and his family have lived and worked in the 10/40 Window for 23 years. They served for 4 years as regular missionaries and 19 years as tentmakers. The Lord has enabled his team to plant two churches and begin several for profit businesses. Patrick has degrees in Business, a Master of Divinity, and a Doctorate of Intercultural Studies. He has written numerous articles on tentmaking and lectures around the world on using business as missions for Christ.

Best book on doing business for transformation out there

The world is changing fast, and the way the Church does missions needs to keep up. Business for transformation (B4T) is the future of missions, not simply to get visas but to bring hope via jobs as hope is brought via Christ. Everyone in the world wants a good job, so we take this book seriously and learn from Patrick Lai how to create good jobs in difficult places amongst unreached peoples.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in starting a business amongst the unreached or for understanding B4T in general. No one has done more research and has more practical experience (a great combination!) in this field than Patrick Lai, so as Larry Sharp states on the back cover he Patrick is the most qualified person to write this book. One note: he leans on principles from his first book, "Tentmaking: The Life and Work of Business as Missions" so I would recommend you read that first or along side this one.

This is a very practical book, not covering the theology of work or missions in general. Instead it focuses on best practices and lots of stories from B4T practitioners around the world. A must read!

About the Author
Colin Ellard, who works at the intersection of neuroscience and architectural and environmental design, is the author of You Are Here: Why We Can Find Our Way to the Moon, but Get Lost in the Mall and Places of the Heart: The Psychogeography of Everyday Life (forthcoming from Bellevue Literary Press). He has published scientific work in international journals in North America, Europe, and Asia for the past twenty-five years and has also contributed to the public discussion of environmental psychology through his work with museums and the media. A cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Waterloo and director of its Urban Realities Laboratory, Ellard lives in Kitchener, Ontario.

How often do our surroundings manipulate us?

Psychogeography is, in Ellard’s opinion, how our surroundings affect our moods and behavior. How plants make any place seem better- and make people less apt to destroy things. How featureless concrete expanses make a person nervous and unwilling to linger. How surroundings can awe, suffocate, sooth, or tempt a person (think the insides of shopping malls). He explains how and why people have these reactions, and how they can be used to manipulate people. He also goes into how digital technology is changing things, and how it could be used to alienate or integrate.

This is important stuff for any architect, designer, or city planner. It’s also helpful for just about anyone who wants to understand why the feel the way they do in certain environments. One part I especially liked was when he wrote about Temple Grandin’s slaughter house designs that keep cattle calm instead of panicked as they go to their deaths- this is manipulation at its most obvious. How many places do we frequent that affect us in a similar way without our ever being aware of it? The book is technical but easily readable. Recommended.

Earned a place in my heart. (ha)

I read non-fiction only sometimes, and was worried this topic might be a bit of technical or dry, but I was quite fascinated on almost every page with a field of science I had never before explored. Ellard splits up his material into the emotional reactions that different places manifest in us, and then breaks down those emotional responses to their technical and scientific elements without ever losing the thread of a compelling narrative.

He mixes in stories from his own life, or examples of emotions caused by places that we've all felt. For instance, I know now that he loved a particular red metal can opener that was taken from him by rust, and he still wistfully thinks of it when opening a can of beans. :) (And then he describes the science of why he may feel that!)

For me, though, I was hugely surprised at the amount that is unknown in this field. Ellard sometimes describes two contrasting theories for what is happening at a given time - like how we feel in places of awe - and tries to reconcile those differences. I think this should be mandatory reading for any urban planner, or anyone who has a house they want to feel like home.

All in all, a fascinating read that I plan on picking up for an architect friend of mine, and maybe I'll share my copy with my aunt and sisters, but I may make them get their own.

Overly academic prose that seems to lack actual meaning. I tried, I'm theoretically interested in this topic, but could not force actual meaning from the pontificating and defining that only a professor would love.

Comprehensive Work on Marketing Strategy and Segmentation!

Thorough and thoughtful work on segmentation and its important role within strategic marketing. This book provides a comprehensive overview of marketing and then drills down into how segmentation must be done to effectively develop value propositions for customers and size market opportunities. It's a great addition to other works like Porter's Competitive Advantage (industry segmentation chapter) and texts from Kotler and colleagues at Kellogg. Onr area if further exploration for a next version is the sizing process itself, which is an art at times but does use some science as well and therefore leverages some best practices. Highly recommended!

No bang for the bucks.

This is a rudamentary book about playing card divination, and the retail price for it is over $20.00. If you do not know anything about cartomancy, you will be paying a hefty price to learn very little. If you are already familiar with cartomancy, you will be paying a hefty price to learn nothing.

Papa Matt has some interesting videos on YouTube and he seems like a nice guy, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this. But he did his fame and fortune no favors by charging such a steep price for a book of so little informational value.

About the Author
Clive Oxenden has taught English and trained teachers for 23 years, mainly in Spain but also in Turkey, Kuwait, Algeria, and the UK, where he was the RSA tutor at Padworth College in Berkshire. He has spent the last fifteen years teaching at the British Council, Valencia.
