Review
“Clearly links the molecular and cellular biological foundations of physiology to organ-system physiology, as well as its aberrations that become disease. Designed to show ‘expertise of a multi-author book with the consistency of a single pen’ the editors sought Yale professors of physiology and then recast their manuscripts into uniform style to become a reliable resource for medical students. The excellent color illustrations can reduce the need for additional hand-outs.”

If you are looking for a physiology/ pathology book look no further. Combine this with either Robbins pathology ( the full text) or cecil and you have enough information to last you 20 years. The book is detailed... I will say that ahead of time. I will also say that I'm currently in PA school and it's just the right amount of detail. You have to know how to get in it, get what you need, and shut it again. I highly recommend this book over guyton, and I would recommend it as much as I would the costanzo physiology. Truly amazing.

Physiology at the molecular level
By SeekingTraveler
This updated edition of "Medical Physiology" by Walter F. Boron, et al. is an outstanding reference.
- It has too much material for a medical school course; however, the extra material may be useful as a reference for future courses and later practice.
- It would be excellent for a graduate school course; however, a graduate course should probably be supplemented by outside reading.
- It would have been nearly perfect for the undergraduate course that was taught at my university; however, the authors did not design this textbook for the undergraduate. Some colleges use Human Physiology or Human Anatomy & Physiology (10th Edition) (Marieb, Human Anatomy & Physiology).

As an alternative to the Boron textbook, a lot of folks like Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology, 13e (Guyton Physiology). That book also has a much appreciated condensed version: Pocket Companion to Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology, 13e (Guyton Physiology). The Hall (Guyton) textbook also comes in a Spanish version (Fisiologia Medica, 11e (Spanish Edition)).

Medical schools do not allow sufficient time to cover the entire book. Since this book was written and edited by medical school faculty, I assume they are perfectly aware of this fact. Therefore, I suppose they wanted to write a comprehensive book that could serve students in future courses, as well as clinical practice. If you are not given enough time to study this entire book, I would recommend focusing your studies on your professor's lecture notes and supplements. It may help to have more concise references for review, such as Physiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 5e (Costanzo Physiology) and BRS Physiology (Board Review Series).

"Medical Physiology" is admirably well-written. The subject matter itself is easy to understand; but I think a lot of folks are going to be challenged by many potentially unfamiliar terms from biochemistry, molecular biology, and medicine. The book has an excellent index; however, the publishers should add a glossary. I greatly appreciated the cross-referencing within the text which helpfully guides the reader to both past and future sections of the book.

The two editors of "Medical Physiology" (Walter F. Boron and Emile L. Boulpaep) were professors in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at the Yale University School of Medicine. Therefore, it should not be surprising that this physiology textbook eventually reduces discussions to the cellular and molecular levels. Such an approach might anger folks who prefer their physiology at the "black box" level. Personally, I think the level of detail is nearly perfect.

This is a multi-author book with many contributors. Most of the contributors are (or were) medical school faculty or researchers. The obvious benefit to this approach is that each topic is covered by a person who is an expert at teaching that topic. To avoid the pitfalls of the multi-author approach, the editors carefully rewrote each of the articles to produce a "single voice" in the narrative. The editors did a great job integrating the submissions by the many contributors: also, subject matter is sequenced, supplemented, cross-referenced, and indexed to optimize student learning.

This textbook has some of the greatest illustrations that I have ever seen. I am certain that most students will remember the visual representations long after the purely verbal explanations have faded. The illustrations alone are sufficient reason to buy this book. I especially admired the three-dimensional perspective drawings.

The editors do not address prerequisite learning for this course. I think most students will not understand this book without the benefit of a prior course in biochemistry or molecular biology. Taking a biochemistry course concurrently will not help much: this book requires a broad knowledge of biochemistry even at its very start.

If you are a college undergraduate who wants to attend medical school, I would highly recommend that you take a one-year biochemistry course. Not only will such preparation help you understand physiology better, it will surely make your medical school course in biochemistry less stressful. Obviously, if you have the time, you should also complete a full one-year course in physiology (or physiology and anatomy) as an undergrad. Physiology at the level taught in this textbook is not difficult to understand; however, there is huge amount to learn. Since medical school may not allow you enough time to learn it all, learning it before medical school might be beneficial.

By design, the book teaches the physiology of a normally-functioning human body. After all, one must fully understand "normal" before one can understand and diagnose "abnormal." ("Abnormal" is covered in a pathology course.) The book occasionally uses "clinical boxes" to briefly touch upon abnormal conditions, but only when such a discussion will more fully "connect the dots" (so to speak).

I was disappointed that this textbook did not explain long-term feedback and control processes (i.e., situations that may require months to establish a new equilibrium).

"Medical Physiology" has no self-assessment questions. You might benefit from using BRS Physiology (Board Review Series).

For those of you who want even more detail (graduate students), try the following: Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology of the Cell, and Lewin's GENES XI.
