Boris Pasternak (1890-1960), who won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Dr. Zhivago, has a reputation for being something of a "holy fool," a descendant of the mad Russian wanderers who spoke prophetic truth to tsars when others were silenced. Fleishman, a long-time Pasternak scholar, has written a dense intellectual biography of this "holy fool" that assumes prior knowledge of Russian history and the basic facts of Pasternak's life and career from childhood in a cultured Jewish family and formation as a poet in the heady atmosphere of Russian modernism through revolution, Stalinist terror, and postwar repression. For the reader with this background, Fleishman creates a coherent portrait of Pasternak as a man of moral courage and political sensitivity who consciously accepted the risks of choosing to speak his truth in the face of tyranny.

Must read to understand the artist in an oppressive regime

This extremely detailed book chronicles Pasternak 's pre -revolutiinary childhood, his genius that could have taken him into many careers and finally his passion for poetry that entertwined him with the 20th century's most notable politicians and revolutionaries. He kept himself ouf of the political fray with his brilliant wordsmithing, the innuendos of which wers not immediately obvious. Hard to put down. Bravo Mr. Fleischman.

Fiona's abandonment of her husband and two young children occurs with little drama or conflict, and is a move no more convincing than the doubts Deighton later visits upon her. The plan conceived by Bret Rensselaer, deputy controller of European economics for Britain's SIS, to dismantle the Wall is intriguing and plausible, but its fictional execution is without force. About the Author

Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). While in New York City working as a magazine illustrator he began writing his first novel, The Ipcress File, which was published in 1962. He is now the author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. At present living in Europe, he has, over the years, lived with his family in ten different countries from Austria to Portugal.

The Great Explanation

Sinker is the sixth book in Deighton's series starring the middle aged and "past it" British spy Bernard Samson. However, this book is different from the other five in that it is written in the third person rather than the first. This allows the reader a greater insight into the doings of other members of the cast, particularly Brett, and makes us realise how Bernard has been used as a pawn in the bigger picture. Previously we were encouraged to believe that Bernard knew everything, that he was the professional in this game played out by amateurs behind their desks in London.
Sinker lets us into the world of Fiona, Bernard's estranged wife who defected to the other side and works for the Stasi in East Berlin. Deighton examines Fiona's life and her fears thoughtfully and realistically, but once again showing how she too is little more than a pawn in what is and also has been a man's game based on old promises, betrayal and the old school tie system.
Unlike many other spy mystery authors, Deighton ensures that the characters are the most important and well developed part of the book. We know their loves and their innermost thoughts, but we are also left with the feeling that we do not quite know everything. It is this air of mystery which keeps the reader hooked until the dramatic conclusion of this book.
Overall, Sinker is essential reading but for absolute enjoyment should be read in conjunction with the preceding five books and the following trilogy.

Unbelievable Nonsense

In order to review Spy Sinker it is necessary to read Game Set & Match to highlight all the contradictions regarding the character of Fiona Samson ,It seems obvious to me that Len Deighton regretted making Fiona a Russian spy and tried to U turn her role from traitor to patriotic heroine in Spy Sinker and he's made a right royal mess of it,He has effectively created two opposing Fiona's,When Bernard is arrested in east Berlin and taken to the KGB HQ Fiona's hostile attitude to Bernard is real,she is bitter that he blew her cover an wrecked her spying mission in England and she can now reveal her real feelings to a man who she never loved despite twelve years of marriage,hers was a marriage of convenience,Bernard was just a pawn in her game.
There is a real tug of love between Bernard and Fiona over the kids,it could be argued this could be part of Fiona's cover as a MI6 double agent but it's not,At the end of book three "London Match"during the spy swap negotiations in Berlin Bernard and Fiona have a moment together where they argue over the custody of the kids Fiona arguing she could offer a better life for them in the east than Bernard can offer,she even begs Bernard not to deprive her of the only kids she will ever have and he could always start a new family with a new woman,If that's not Fiona saying goodbye for good what is?,it hardly fits in with the the Fiona in Spy Sinker,all she wants for her kids there is to be back home with them so we have a glaring contradiction there,she would never want to take her kids to the country she's spying on if she was working still for MI6,how do you explain that one Len?
In Mexico Set Fiona arranges for Bernard to be kidnapped with the aid of the hyperdermic wielding nurse for an enforced meeting with her at Heathrow to do a deal using the kids as negotiating pawns,we know it's Fiona in the car she reveals in a later book that she made contact with Bernard at Heathrow to sister Tessa during a stay at their aunts house in Holland so we know it's her in the car but we can't have Fiona behaving like that in Spy Sinker so It's exit Fiona and enter Miranda Keller Pavel Moskvin's KGB agent and she's too convenient to be true,She's a Brit (that's useful) She's an actress (even more useful) and surprise surprise she's the one woman in a thousand that can impersonate Fiona's voice to perfection even fooling Bernard so it seems that we have two Fiona's sitting in the back,the real one and the fake one according to different books,it's a good job both girls never spoke at once or Bernard would have got Fiona in stereo.
We are being asked to believe that in Spy Sinker Fiona would give up her marriage,her children and everything she's suppose to value to suite the interest of a trio of self serving miserable worthless old creeps in the shape of Brett Rensselar,Silas Gaunt and the adle brained senile old fool of a DG who just see Fiona as expendable,the only enjoyable part in the book is when Pavel Moskvin shoots Brett Rensselar at the Berlin train station,probably the only worthwhile thing that Moksvin ever did.
I think LD thought that Spy Sinker would overwrite everything about Fiona in G,S & M,sorry but the Fiona in the first trilogy can be taken on face value,there was no Operation Sinker in these books and Fiona was no MI6 double agent

To really enjoy any of the nine books in the three triologies,
Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match- Spy Hook, Spy Line, and Spy Sinker - Faith, Hope, and Charity one should begin with Deighton's Winter. This books traces the story of the German family named Winter from New Years, 1900 through the close of the Second World War and in the process introduces most of the principal characters that appear in the subsequent trilogies. I have recently reread the ten books, starting with Winter and my enjoyment was multiplied many times over the first readings.

Ms. Winlock's first foray into erotica is a rollicking good ride. The tantalizing descriptions... including sumptuous feasts.. excite all the senses and leave you begging for more. Her self-effacing humor is simultaneously hilarious and very, very human. I am eagerly awaiting her next missive.

A recipe for love.

I really enjoyed this cleverly told tale as it was much more than just another sex story. The author created some memorable and likable characters (as well as a couple you love to hate). With its food based theme and its accurate descriptions of dishes created by the female protagonist, the reader is confronted with a double challenge...hunger and sexual appetite. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a "cover that girl in chocolate syrup and #*!@ her til the cows come home" (thanks, Frank Zappa) type of story. Food isn't a part of the sexual equation, but caring and loving is. I felt the author did an outstanding job with her depictions of the sexual part of this love story, nothing kinky or unusual, just two people, one experienced and one not, discovering their love for one another. It was really quite refreshing.

Give this one a try if you have a little time to kill and especially if you are new to this genre.

With a bit of dedicated editing I would rate this one five stars but as it stands it gets four.

Black-and-white images of storytellers and sites are featured throughout, and the book has a clean layout with sidebars. However, while the entries are well ordered and clear, there is no set structure in terms of naming or topic division. Entries on films, for instance, are named for the given movie, while other sections are named for the location where a sighting was reported. Other entries are items of interest (such as "Dogs and Bigfoot"), but there is no way to categorize these subjects and separate them out. In addition, the point of view of the encyclopedia lacks consistency: some entries are written in an academic style (though with no citations), while others read like personal stories (some even suggesting that Bigfoot is not only real, but also a danger to the general public). Informative Overview of Bigfoot Lore

A excellent, encyclopedic collection of information about Bigfoot and his relatives, certain to be informative to all but the most knowledgeable. There are, of course, the expected accounts about Jacko, the yeti, the links to proto-humans, UFOs and Bigfoot, and the Russian almasty captured in WWII. However, there are also aspects I was not as familiar with including numerous reports of Bigfoot shot at but showing no signs of being hit, reports linking Bigfoot with maintaining shelter in cave systems, and apparent Bigfoot shelters found in the woods (something Les Stroud, Survivorman, discussed in his Bigfoot-hunting TV special). The encyclopedic format and liberal use of photos aids readability, and provides a broad overview of the topic. Makes me want to go hunting for Bigfoot in the nearby Shawnee National Forest of Southern Illinois, a Bigfoot hangout I've been told (farmers frequently report seeing them walking across their fields near the distant treeline frequently). Highly recommended.

I also liked the matter-of-fact writing style of Redfern

Although controversial, this is undoubtably an intriguing topic. I thought I'd heard about everything related to Sasquatch but Redfern expands the genre to include description of a variety of similar hominid sightings. Many of these I had never heard of, including the Almasty of Russia, Batutut of Borneo, and Yowie of Australia. I especially appreciated the encyclopedic nature of the book as it can be used to quickly, alphabetically locate information. I also liked the matter-of-fact writing style of Redfern. I can recommend this book.

Recommended and exhaustive compendium which is not afraid to court controversy!

Nick Redfern has taken a great volume of information and put it together into a compendium that is fairly complete. The author gives brief overviews not only of American reports, but gives a truly international feel by showcasing reports out of South America, Australia, Asia, Europe and even his home country of England, a lot of which I was unaware of and most likely was written about in Nick's other Bigfoot books focusing on Anomalous Primates of the British Isles. I do have to caution though, that the author is not prone to shy away from the more fantastical elements reported by some witnesses, such as the alleged connection to UFOs, strange disappearances by these creatures, hominids which seem to be impervious to gunfire and cases where the creatures seemed to be not entirely substantial but are described in terms of a witness attempting to hit the creature, but the object used goes right through the creature(!) Whether you agree with or believe those more fantastical elements or not is irrelevant because the author has included those bits of controversy into this excellent volume with no prejudice or editing. I truly enjoyed this book, and do recommend it to those who may not know a great deal about this subject or for that person (like me) who just loves to read about these mystery creatures. I give this one a solid 9 stars. Excellent all the way around!

These methods work ... well!

I had the pleasure and good fortune to have Marshall as my broker. The methods in this book do work ... they work very well in fact. I will be revisiting this book yearly - if not quarterly - as a needed reminder that following the practices outlined will only serve to increase my business profitability and overall quality of business and personal life. Well worth the read!

Best book for those who want to suceed as a real estate agent

One of the best real estate books ever. Real 'meat and potatoes' content. Clearly spells out what it takes to success in this business. I have been a real estate agent for over 20 years and while there is nothing new in here, it's presented in a very logical, linear format. If you want to success as a real estate agent, buy this book, read it, and most importantly, ACT ON IT!

A MARVELOUS COLLECTION OF WRITINGS—FROM ABIGAIL ADAMS TO DE BEAUVOIR

Editor Alice S. Rossi wrote in the Preface of this 1973 book, “When the publisher approached me… The magnitude of the task---to select and abridge the critical documents in feminist history over the past two centuries---seemed overwhelming… My sociologist’s and feminist’s imagination was fully engaged by the attempt to trace out the connections among the ideas expressed in a published work, the personal life behind an essay or book, and the larger time and place in history in which both the life and the work were anchored. The idea grew to precede each abridged selection with an essay that would serve … to integrate the personal lives with the published essays and books…” (Pg. ix-x) She continues, “As an activist and feminist scholar, I have felt the wish to continuity… Now I have acquired a long line of feminists in the past. There is strength in the vision of a sisterhood that has roots in the past and extends into the future. I hope this volume enables its readers to share in that vision.” (Pg. xi) [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 716-page 1974 paperback edition.]

Writings included begin with Abigail Adams’ famous “Remember the Ladies” letter to her husband John Adams; also included are excerpts by Mary Wollstonecraft; Frances Wright; Margaret Fuller; John Stuart Mill; Sarah and Angelina Grimk�; Elizabeth Cady Stanton; Susan B. Anthony; Friedrich Engels; Emma Goldman; Margaret Sanger; Charlotte Perkins Gilman; Jane Addams; Virginia Woolf; Margaret Mead; Simone de Beauvoir, and others. The selections are well-introduced by Rossi, and are (unlike other collections of this type) lengthy enough to give a fair representation of the writer’s views.

To give you a brief idea of what is contained herein, here are a few brief excerpts: Abigail Adams wrote, “in the new Code of Laws… I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation… such of you as wish to be happy willingly give up the harsh title of Master for the more tender and endearing one of Friend. Why then, not put it out of the power of the vicious and the Lawless to use us with cruelty and indignity with impunity… Regard us then as Beings placed by providence under your protection and in imitation of the Supreme Being make use of that power only for our happiness.” (Pg. 10-11)

Mary Wollstonecraft wrote, “the woman who strengthens her body and exercises her mind will, by managing her family and practicing various virtues, become the friend, and not the humble dependent of her husband… she will not find it necessary to conceal her affection, or to pretend to an unnatural coldness of constitution to excite her husband’s passions. In fact, if we revert to history, we shall find that the women who have distinguished themselves have neither been the most beautiful nor the most gentle of their sex.” (Pg. 51) She adds, “To render mankind more virtuous… both sexes must act from the same principle; but how can that be expected when only one is allowed to see the reasonableness of it … To render also the social compact truly equitable, and in order to spread those enlightening principles … women must be allowed to found their virtue on knowledge, which is scarcely possible unless they be educated by the same pursuits as men.” (Pg. 81)

John Stuart Mill argues, “Neither does it avail anything to say that the nature of the two sexes adapts them to their present function and position, and renders these appropriate to them… I deny that anyone knows, or can know, the nature of the two sexes, as long as they have only been seen in their present relation to one another…What is now called the nature of women is an eminently artificial thing---the result of forced repression in some directions, unnatural stimulation in others…” (Pg. 203) Later, he adds, “The second benefit to be expected from giving to women the free use of their faculties, by leaving them the free choice of their employments, and opening to them the same field of occupation and the same prizes and encouragements as to other human beings, would be that of doubling the mass of mental faculties available for the higher service of humanity.” (Pg. 232)

Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote in her introduction to The Woman's Bible, “The only points in which I differ from all ecclesiastical teaching is that I do not believe that any man every saw or talked with God, I do not believe that God inspired the Mosaic code, or told the historians what they say he did about woman, for all the religions on the face of the earth degrade her, and so long as woman accepts the positon that they assign her, her emancipation is impossible.” (Pg. 405-406)

Friedrich Engels states, “Thus when monogamous marriage first makes its appearance in history, it is not as the reconciliation of man and woman, still less as the highest form of such a reconciliation. Quite the contrary. Monogamous marriage comes on the scene as the subjugation of one sex by the other; it announces a struggle between the sexes unknown throughout the whole previous prehistoric period… The first class opposition that appears in history coincides with the development of the antagonism between man and woman in monogamous marriage, and the first class oppression coincides with that of the female sex by the male.” (Pg. 482)

Charlotte Perkins Gilman observes, “If the wife is not, then, truly a business partner, in what way does she earn from her husband the food, clothing, and shelter she receives at his hands? By house service, it will be instantly replied. This is the general misty idea upon he subject---that women earn all they get, and more, by house service. Here we come to a very practical and definite economic ground. Although not producers of wealth, women serve in the final processes of preparation and distribution. Their labor in the household has a definite economic value… The labor of women in the house, certainly, enables men to produce more wealth than they otherwise could; and in this way women are economic factors in society. But so are horses… The labor which the wife performs in the household is given as part of her functional duty, not as employment.” (Pg. 573)

Virginia Woolf points out, “I could not help thinking, as I looked at the works of Shakespeare… that… it would have been impossible … for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine… what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith… She was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar and logic… She picked up a book now and then… But then her parents came in and told her to mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about books and papers… She had the quickest fancy, a gift like her brother’s, for the tune of words. Like him, she had a taste for the theater. She stood at the stage door; she wanted to act, she said. Men laughed in her face… She could get no training in her craft… That, more or less, is how the story would run … if a woman in Shakespeare’s day had had Shakespeare’s genius…” (Pg. 639-640) She adds, “That woman, then, who was born with a gift of poetry in the sixteenth century, was an unhappy woman, a woman at strife with herself. All the conditions of her life, all her own instincts, were hostile to the state of mind which is needed to set free whatever is in the brain.” (Pg. 642)

This is a wonderful, comprehensive, and eminently useful collection of the writings which led up to the “Second Wave” of the women’s movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Reading this book is like a “crash course” in pre-feminist history. It will be immensely valuable to anyone studying the background of the women’s movement.
