About the Author
Jim Quillen (1919-1998) had a difficult childhood; by the time he was an adolescent, he was regularly getting into serious trouble. At 22—chained at the wrists and sentenced to 45 years behind bars—he saw the inside of Alcatraz Island for the first time. Many years later Quillen returned to the island, which by that time was part of the National Park Service system. For several years he was one of the island's most popular volunteers—retelling his story as part of the audio tour, and sharing his past with visitors fascinated with his life experiences.

Excellent Read

Jim's firsthand account of what took place inside Alcatraz during the "Battle of Alcatraz" in May of 1946, is riveting. If you only need one reason to purchase this book, that is the one. The rest of his book is a testament to life inside Alcatraz and Jim's self examination of his life and the change that resulted.

If you like real accounts of life in prison , and they don't come much bigger than Alcatraz , this is a great read , you get a real sense of life on the inside and the thought process of guys with nothing to lose !

A very interesting account of life at the Rock.

A short and interesting account of life as a prisoner at Alcatraz. The author gives a good explanation of the psychological toll being sent to Alcatraz had on inmates.
