A great look inside some of the connections and construction inside some interesting buildings. Obviously for building professionals and students this is my favourite book in the "Detail in" series of books. Some good projects to be detailed out.

This book is Not about the Design and architecture but Explains how to get it done and what should be used and where.

So basically there is the structure and a couple of pictures of it. then there is a floor plan ( to scale) and finally the materials of the structure With the diagram of the structure in detail.

So u you don't just see the design BUT also know the materials he had built it with. You can actually relate it to another project and not wonder about the materials to be used then

She earned a degree in English Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She also studied Economics at London University College in England. She currently resides in Los Angeles.

A Modern twist to that "other" Book

Although I am currently not in a relationship, Girlfriend 911 has helped me TREMENDOUSLY! I've learned to relax, find my boundaries and respect them! I tend to be very impatient in relationships so I love the advice about timing so I've bookmarked Chapter 8 and often just pull it out and read it outloud to myself! I also completely agree with owning up to your own contribution to a relationship that's not working. Be clear with what you want and don't want in a relationship. Just that little piece of advice worked wonders for me.

I keep this book handy and refer to it often. Thanks so much Jacquee!! Your book has changed the whole way I look at dating.

They are woman, hear them roar

I read through this book in record time, thanks to a strong recommendation from an old friend. Disclosures first - yeah, I'm a dude. And certainly Girlfriend 911 is a worthy hallmark of chick lit and to be honest, no person possessing a Y chromosome ought to be anywhere near the proximity of this book, due to its brazen and often amusing ego-shattering hard truths. Worse still would be letting their woman get her lovely paws on it and by proxy, holding themselves and their hubbies to higher standards of human communication and mutual respect. I read the book because I'm an author myself and I wanted to measure current zeitgeist in twenty-first century literature when it comes to dealing with the problems of romance between us cavemen and the fairer, wiser sex. Kahn and LePage do an excellent job of analyzing modern dysfunctional American relationships; their prose in relaying the importance of owning up to self-realization and applying it to real life actualization is sharp, witty, and poignant. I would certainly recommend this to any female friends having difficulties in their relationships, particularly those who've been subject to more selfish and arrogant examples of the opposite gender. Excellent read for women. Men, perhaps not as much, especially if you're one of those fellas who never take ownership of your frequent errors...unless you're a sensitive and caring guy like me, of course. - Frank Bardessono, author of The Kindness Of Ravens.

So worth it!

This book came to me during a much needed time. I was ending a 7 year relationship in which we built a life together, but he didn't want to get married. Confused and hurt, I left the realtionship. We were continuing to be "friends". Everytime we hung out, I would leave the situation feeling used and like I deserved more from this man.
Then, ta-dah, the book came to me. Now living alone, I had time to read it and actually soak it up. Everything made so much sense. GF911 helps you understand that by lowering your standards, you actually create the problems in the relationship. I knew this, but needed cold, hard words to slap me in the face. Many of my friends would make excuses for me. Like "What a jerk!" "I can't believe he did that to you!" But after reading the book and taking responsibilty for lowering my standards and accepting "crumbs", I saw the light. I have been doing it wrong for so long!
I wrote my goodbye letter and feel more empowered. I wrote my standards list, and feel even more empowered. Why have so many of us lost that self-respect? GF911 tells you that you can get it back!
I am referring all of my friends going through realtionship problems to this book. It has helped me understand where I always go wrong in breakups and why I always feel like the a-hole when I "go rogue".

This book is well set out. The subtitle says it all "An introduction to sign language linguistics." There are introductory chapters on sign languages and Auslan (Australian Sign Language), and then chapters on linguistic topics of phonetics and phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and discourse. For those with little knowledge of linguistics, don't worry all is explained, and all the major topics of any language are covered. Those in Australia studying Auslan really should use this resource and those in New Zealand (like me) will readily adapt to the NZ deaf community. (Oh dear, that's high praise from a kiwi!) It certainly extends on what is available in NZSL linguistics, and is a welcome addition.

Very interesting especially if you like the ins and outs of language. It's thorough but it is heavy reading and you certainly need to concentrate. The reasoning behind each discussed aspect of this language certainly leaves you appreciating sign language. It is helpful if you are attending Tafe and doing Cert II as it covers what you need to know.

i think your facts are wrong about the percent of African Americans in the US......also we need to stop using the word Minority as u state it for African American. Truth be told the Minority in this world are white people....don't get it twisted

The race card in scholarly clothing

I bought this book expecting the author to explore minority incareration and it's causes as opposed to other racial groups and compare what factors contribute to disporportionate racial bias in arrest statistics. In short I was looking for an honest evaluation of the dynamics that cause more blacks to be arrested. What I got instead was a cover to cover complaint and accusation on how unfair and racist the criminal justice system is. The author even goes so far as to suggest that if a law is broken more frequently by blacks then the lawmakers are racist. I'm a racist for not buying into his rant and you're a racist for reading my review. Don't waste your money on this book.... you racist!

THE POWER AND GLORY OF HEAVY METAL

Heavy metal music is not only defined by its look and sound, but also by the album cover art which often did as good, if not a better job, of selling the album as any other aspect. Heavy Metal Thunder from Chronicle Books takes a look at the proud and often controversial history of heavy metal album artwork. In today's world of CD's, iPods, MP3 players, and file sharing, cover art has become a relative lost art. Such was not the case twenty or twenty-five years ago as record companies and bands new the importance of producing a cover which could catch the eye of potential buyers. Having lived through the heavy metal years myself, I can truthfully admit to buying many albums based solely on the cover art, without ever having heard the band's music. Sometimes this worked out as in the cases of bands like Grim Reaper and Exciter...other times it didn't, but even if it didn't, you still had that great album cover art.

Writers James Sherry and Neil Aldis trace the history of heavy metal album art from that first, foreboding cover to Black Sabbath's first album in 1969, right up to the present say's nu-metal and black metal releases. But this isn't just 250 pages of pictures; the pair also look at the music that inspired the art and how the art was a reflection of the band's music and personality. There were the hard-edged bands like Iron Maiden , Armored Saint, Manowar, and Black Sabbath that often subscribed to the swords & sorcery/gothic approach.

Then there were the glam/hair metal bands who, more often than not, put themselves front and center on the cover, clearly trying to appeal to the female metal fans yet still reeling in the guys with sexually suggestive covers and scantily clad women. But these bands were labeled as poseurs by the more hardcore metal heads who turned their attention to speed and thrash bands like Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth, and to black metal bands like Venom and Slayer.

Some of the most notorious album covers in history wait inside the pages of Heavy Metal Thunder including Twisted Sisters "Stay Hungry" showing Dee Snider munching on a bloody leg bone, Black Sabbath's gothic "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", Carcass' disturbing "Reek of Purification" and Marilyn Manson's "Mechanical Animal". Special sections are devoted to Iron Maiden's covers depicting zombie mascot Eddie, painted by Derek Riggs.

This was like taking a stroll back in time and revisiting old friends you haven't seen in a long time. If you're a metalhead, you'll enjoy paging through the book and seeing just how many of these albums that you owned, or perhaps still own. There are literally hundreds of album covers pictured here covering every sub-genre of heavy metal including grindcore and grunge. Sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, and sometimes repulsive, Heavy Metal Thunder is a book that any metal fan must have.

A really unique and useful book!

I don't know of any other book like this. In one place you can get some of the most creative metal album covers. For example, on page 118 there is a very interesting article on Derek Riggs who did Iron Maiden's legendary album covers. There is a definite connection between the art of some of the album covers and science fiction art. Certain aspects of heavy metal are related to ancient paganism and this is reflected in the artwork of various bands. I would highly recommend this book to both metal fans and fans of science fiction art.

James Sherry and Neil Aldis have come up with a metal must-have with Heavy Metal Thunder, a collection of amazing cover artwork from some amazing metal albums. Since this is a collection of artwork and not a self-described "encyclopedia" there isn't any need to include everything, though Sherry and Aldis definitely cover the basics. From Sabbath to the NWOBHM to the hair metal era to thrash, death, black and even nu metal, Heavy Metal Thunder looks at classic imagery spanning decades, crossing national borders and covering just about every sub-genre metal has to offer (progressive and power metal are conspicuously absent). The covers included here also range from the iconic (Maiden, Priest) to the obscure (Acid Reign, Excel) to the grotesque (Cannibal Corpse, Fleshcrawl).

My only complaint - and it's more of a wish than a complaint - is that a large format version isn't available. I'd love to have seen a 13x15 hardcover book that would be a true "coffee table". This paperback is more of an "end table" book.

I'd absolutely recommend Heavy Metal Thunder to any metal fan, whether casual or utterly committed. It's just a great way to appreciate some of metal's most memorable covers.
