Great lessons by a great teacher...

What can I say...Russ is a great teacher. I enjoyed the material presented in the lessons a great deal. As a matter of fact, it is so good that even though I had purchased it years ago when it was packaged with cassettes, I decided to buy it again to have the cd for quick song access. I only wish Russ would make available the "20 Fiddle Tunes For Guitar", previously produced in cassette version, available in cd format!

Very challenging but well worth it

The music ranges from etudes to preludes to a Suite (Populaire Bresilienne). The etudes tend to focus in on individual concepts and techniques (e.g., barres and arpeggios). I've added many of them to my regular warmup and practice sessions. The only complaint I have is that some of the notation that Villa-Lobos used is rather confusing, and sometimes not consistent. For example, the harmonics (I've heard many people complain about this). I think the way to improve this edition is with more notation (yes, I know that Noad did the notation, but it needs some augmentation). As well as some clear introduction to the concepts that are being introduced with the individual etudes. The preludes also could use some more insight.
Still, it's great stuff, and I highly recommend it for a good introduction to 20th century guitar music.

Andros Georgiou and Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, George Michael to you, are “The Children of The Greeks: 2nd generation cousins.” Their fathers, two Greek men from Cyprus, immigrated to London and married two English women from London. Their fathers’ intense bond translated into their two families being raised as one, their two sons being raised as brothers.

The time was England from the early 1960’s to the mid 1980’s from the suburbs to the West End, then, it moved throughout the world, right up until they parted ways in 1998. And, for the most part, it was all about the music. As children, the games of their youth became about the music and, as they grew older, their childhood games turned into training sessions that, when circumstances miraculously put George Michael in a spotlight that shined in front of the world for the rest of his life, they were ready. If anything could make two young men in their early 20’s ready for a life of glamour and style, celebrities and royalty, they had only up to that timed dreamed about.

And for a long time, it seemed nothing could tear these two apart. When fame happened, George brought Andros along without so much as a hesitation, and Andros stuck by his brother, looking out for him at every turn. In turn, George watched out for Andros when he would get carried away in a sea of drugs and sexual promiscuity, until George actually steered Andros to the lady who would become his wife for the next 22 years and still counting, Jackie.

When tragedies did come that reached the point of devastating, their bond was stronger than ever, especially when close friends and family passed away suddenly and tragically.

When the time came for George to discuss his sexuality with Andros, in the beginning, it initially was nothing more than a metaphoric speed bump in their relationship; something that Andros totally didn’t expected, but, within short order, didn’t make a bit of difference to him. Andros openly included George in the family that he was soon to have, asking George to be the “Godfather” to his two sons, James and Harry. It is fact. When James was born, Andros brought George right into the delivery room and they welcomed James together, even giving him his first bath at the hospital.

Life definitely wasn’t perfect, but, to most of all, they seemed close to pretty much having it all.

Then 7 April 1998 happened.

George was arrested for “lewd conduct” in a Beverly Hills park restroom. The world knows what happened as it made worldwide headlines. In the personal, that date and that occurrence was the beginning of a tear in their relationship that has yet to be resolved to this day. The actual incident that ended their life-long relationship occurred under a year later and was nothing more than a “silly argument” at a restaurant where they had lunch scores of times before. Its what came afterward that Andros totally didn’t expect and at times to this day still can’t fathom.

It was over between them? They have never spoken directly since.

GREAT BOOK!

This book didn't just give me information about the marvelous career and numerous accomplishments of an artist of his international fame and reputation. What makes this book so memorable is when it talks about George's childhood, adolescence, and conflicts about his going public with his sexual orientation. Andros' book also emphasizes his the closeness of his relationship between he and George (they're cousins, but were like brothers). Throughout the book I felt I got to know George asshirt off hi a very troubled but great human being who woul give you the shirt off his back if you were in need. I recommend this book without hesitation.

Having been a fan for many years...This book connected so many missing pieces of his life i was always in the dark about..Andros took you on a journey most fans can only dream of..and i honestly felt as if i was there..he spoke about many thing ..reflecting on their childhood bond, their wild parties, how Andros met his now wife to the loss of his MOM and Anselmo.. and how George met Kenny..but more importantly family...and the bond....i thank Andros for this...as a longtime fan...i really did appreciate this book and for what it is.. Thank You..

A Different Perspective

It was an interesting read for me. As I worked for George's camp for a few years, it was definitely interesting to see the situation from someone else's point of view, other than my own. Wish things had turned out differently for all of us, but it is what it is. A great read for any fan, past or present, or anyone who wants to take a true "inside look" at the lifestyle...

Buzzword Governance

After reading The Role of Independent Directors after Sarbanes-Oxley by Dravis and discovering an excellent brief guide for directors, I was reluctant to even pick up Corporate Governance: A Board Director's Pocket Guide: Leadership, Diligence, and Wisdom by Eric Yocam and Annie Choi. What more could it offer? Surprisingly, I decided it can be a useful supplement, as the preface notes, for "a quick review." However, it definitely is NOT, as advertised on the back cover, "brief yet complete." (my emphasis)

If you are looking for guidance on your responsibilities as a director under Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), you'll find them outlined in the Pocket Guide simply with the titles of 11 sections. You get only a hint of what you need to know. Even if you bother to search out the two articles footnoted, there will still be many gaps in your knowledge. While "Sarbanes-Oxley and Cost Engineering" might be a great guide for how SOX impacts "the world of engineering, architecture, and construction," there are better references for directors.

The one page chapter, "Global Governance Comparison," is no better. We are told that "corporate governance various (varies?) from country to country." "Japan, China and South Korea have dramatically different corporate models than those of the United States, Britain and Australia but readers are not given the faintest clue as to how those models differ. We learn that in Germany "a Vorstand is the management board of a corporation where the Aufsichtsrat or Supervisory Board controls the Vorstand." The reader is left clueless as to the composition and roles of these boards, other than that one "controls" the other.

Regarding board independence, the authors cite studies that found "having separate committees to nominate, compensate, audit, and govern are more effective ways to monitor governance rather than having the board itself regulate these items." Good advice, as far as it goes. However, the three page chapter, "Committees," simply lists 17 types of committees. It provides no clue as to which are required and what their composition should be. For example, under SOX, only independent directors can serve on audit committees and at least one must be a "financial expert." The NYSE requires a compensation committee for its listed companies; the NASDAQ doesn't. However, the NASDAQ requires that only independent directors may participate in the decisions. Such basic governance requirements are missing from the Pocket Guide but are readily accessed in the Dravis book.

At the outset of this review I said the Pocket Guide could be a "useful supplement." The book's "strength" lies in providing a laundry list of buzz words. The buzz words are as likely to be derived from management as from governance discussions. For example, in the chapter on "Best Governance Practice" we are given a few bullet points each on SMART Objectives Technique, KISS Technique, and SWOT technique. (Why is the third heading not fully capitalized?) The chapter on "Commitment to Quality" touches on the following: Business Process Improvement Technique, Six Sigma Technique, Total Quality Management Technique, Five Whys Technique, Cause and Effect Technique, and Taguchi Technique. Other chapters give us a few words on the Learning Organization, Capability Maturity Model Integration, Software Engineering Institute (how Carnegie Mellon institute fits into the typology isn't explained), Total Quality Management (repeating one sentence of the two sentence explanation from the previous chapter, in case you missed it), Pareto Principle, and Total Cost of Ownership Technique.

If you might be embarrassed as a director by never having heard of the Taguchi Technique or one of the others, the Corporate Governance: A Board Director's Pocket Guide: Leadership, Diligence, and Wisdom will typically provide very brief explanations that might actually be helpful. You can read this one while waiting to board at the airport. It could be 15 minutes well spent. If you only have three minutes, read the appendix and glossary in the back. Following the Pareto Principle, you'll get 80% of the book's value in 20% of the time.
