Imagining Tibet: Perceptions, Projections, and FantasiesFrom Brand: Wisdom Publications

In the past century, the Western view of Tibet has evolved from an exotic Shangri-la filled with golden idols and the promise of immortality, to a peaceful land with an enlightened society now ravaged by outside aggression. How and why did our perception change? How accurate are our modern conceptions of Tibet?

Imagining Tibet is a collection of essays that reveal these Western conceptions. Providing an historical background to the West's ever-changing relationship with Tibet, Donald Lopez, Jeffrey Hopkins, Jamyang Norbu, and other noted scholars explore a variety of topics - from Western perceptions of Tibetan approaches to violence, monastic life, and life as a nation in exile, to representations of Tibet in Western literature, art, environmentalism, and the New Age movement.

Review
"Imagining Tibet brings together some of our most thoughtful scholars to ruminate on the ways that mythology has become merged with what we take to be the reality of Tibet. A rich kaleidoscope of insights on this fascinating subject." (Orville Schell, author of Virtual Tibet: Searching for Shangri-La from the Himalayas to Hollywood)

"This illuminating collection of essays will be of interest to all Tibet-watchers, whatever their political or intellectual persuasion." (Melvyn C. Goldstein, author of The Snow Lion and the Dragon: China, Tibet, and the Dalai Lama)

"This important book shows how Tibet's realities are represented by others; it should be read by everyone interested in the origin and subtext of such fascination and imagery." (Tsering Shakya, Fellow in Tibetan Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies.)

"An important discussion of the western mythology of Tibet as Shangri-La. It includes three papers on foreign missionaries and scholars of Tibet, eight works on the western and Chinese views of Tibet as other, eight commentaries, and a synthesis by the editors. It also includes a foreword by Tsering Shakya, a bibliographic reference, biographical data, and a useful index. A delightful book." (Religious Studies Review)

Versatile and scholarly discussion
By inner exile
based, more often than not, on updated lectures, of which all but one - that of R. Barnett's excellent paper - were given at 'Mythos Tibet' symposium held in Bonn, in May 1996. Participants from various fields of Tibetology, social and cultural anthropology, historical studies, Tibet support activism, etc. guarantee multi- and interdisciplinary approach to interested laymen and specialists alike. Also included are bountiful illustrations, endnotes, incomplete index, and exhaustive bibliography.

The first segment focuses on 'Missionaries & Scholars', and the historical development of certain images they filtered through/(mis)construed. Rudolf Kaschewky - The image of Tibet in the West before the 19th c.: References from Herodotus & Claudius Ptolemaios through the Portuguese Jesuit Antonio Andrade's Ladakhi mission and his Italian brethren Ippolito Desideri's stay in Tsang less than a century later, to the Augustinian monk Antonius Georgius's "Alphabetum Tibetanum". John Bray - 19th and early 20th c. missionary images of Tibet. Per Kvaerne - Tibet images among researchers of Tibet.

Part 2 'The Sight of the "Other"' investigates a number of aspects of the Western (and Chinese) views of Tibet "against the backdrop provided by their social, political, and ideological contexts" (p. xii). Alex C. McKay - The British construction of an image of Tibet (highlight, henceforth abbreviated 'hl'): "The failure to establish an image of Tibet fully consistent with the Tibetans' self-image was partly due to both the inherently class-based and imperial perceptions of the cadre officers of [British India] and their alliance with the ruling elite within Tibet. But it was principally the result of Whitehall's refusal to recognize Tibetan independence" (p. 85) -- that is Tibet as a pawn in the 'Great Game' being played primarily by Britain, Russia (at the turn of the 20th c.) and China at the time. Peter H. Hansen - Tibet and the cinema in the early 20th century. Thomas Heberer - Old Tibet a hell on Earth? The myth of Tibet and Tibetans in Chinese art and propaganda (hl): the Hans' projections/misrepresentations labelled 'exotic-erotic, patriarchal-pedagogical, historical (or rather historicizing)-primitive'. Sadly missing from the list - and for that matter, not only from this very article but from the entire tome - is the priest-patron/guru-disciple/spirito-political (mchod-yon) angle that had been a determining factor in the relationship between the heads/luminaries of various Tibetan sects/schools/lineages and the imperial court; especially under the Mongol (Yuan) and Manchu (Qing) rule of China, and to a much lesser extent under the Ming dynasty as well. For more on this, consult the 1990s titles by Seyfort Ruegg.

Poul Pedersen - Tibet, Theosophy and the psychologization of Buddhism. Frank J. Korom - The role of Tibet in the New Age movement. Donald S. Lopez Jr. - The image of Tibet of the great mystifiers (hl): The renowned Buddhologist/Tibetologist singles out surgical fitter Cyril Hoskin turned New Age impostor under the widely known pen name Lobzang Rampa for analysis. He honestly admits that "it is not simply that the scholar needs the dilettante in order to define his identity. [LR] is rather like the glud, the ransom...offered to the demons in a Tibetan exorcism ceremony in exchange for the spirit of the possessed...So Rampa is given to the public, who does not care what the scholar says, and he derives his livelihood in the bargain. In return, the scholar, by renouncing the public, receives symbolic capital by disavowing that upon which he is ultimately dependent..." (p. 199). Peter Bishop - Not only a Shangri-la. Images of Tibet in Western literature. Heather Stoddard - The development in perception of Tibetan art. From golden idols to ultimate reality.

Part 3, dubbed 'Standpoints', contains: P. Jeffrey Hopkins - Tibetan monastic colleges. Rationality versus the demands of allegiance. Robert Barnett - '"Violated specialness". Western political representations of Tibet' (hl) deals with the exiled Tibetan government's changing tactics in light of their Western reception (political and civilian). "[T]hey [the Western one-worlder globalists] offered a language that could be used ambiguously so that the domestic audience would see it as criticizing China while Chinese officials might be persuaded that the criticisms were sufficiently mild so as not to be threatening to fundamental concerns [i.e., profit to a select few and oppression for the masses; one market, one consumer...] They avoided terms referring to total destruction, nationhood, territory, or status (p. 291). [A] shared linguistic framework within which Chinese and non-Chinese political forces can conceal their differences and, by exploiting its ambiguities, find themselves within what is in effect an alliance in diminishing or neutralizing the claims of Tibetan nationalists" (p. 297). Calculated charade and hypocricy, in other words! This rhymes with the remark Hugh E. Richardson (1905-2000; British Trade Agent at Gyantse and Officer-in-Charge at Lhasa from 1936 to 1940, 1946-7; and then in the capacity of representative for the independent government of India from 1947-50) had made: "[t]he British Government...sold the Tibetans down the river...I was profoundly ashamed of the government" (p. 86). For this latter authority's collected writings on Tibetan history and culture, try to obtain High Peaks, Pure Earth: Collected Writings on Tibetan History and Culture ed. Michael Aris (1946-99), London 1998.

Elliot Sperling's '"Orientalism" and aspects of violence in the Tibetan tradition' (hl) demystifies the non-violent notion of the Tibetan politico-religious arena by emphasizing the responsibility of the 5th Dalai lama Ngag-dbang bLo-bzang rgya-mtsho in recruiting the military aid commanded by the Qoshot/Oirat Mongol Gushri khan to overthrow the alliance that had been forged between the gTsang-pa rulers (sde-srid) and the Karma-pa (especially the Red Hat (zhwa-dmar) branch) sect then in power, thereby establishing dGe-lugs-pa theocracy/hierocracy in 1642. The author backs up his assertion by quoting relevant passages from the Great Fifth's autobiography (rang-thar) under the ultra short title "Dukla". The same source was used by Samten G. Karmay, who arrived at a somewhat different conclusion in laying the blame for the Mongols' armed intervention on the councillor-secretary (zhal-ngo) bSod-nams chos-'phel's (1595-1657) treasonous falsification of his master's order (cf. 'The fifth Dalai lama and his reunification of Tibet' in: The Arrow and the Spindle, Studies in History, Myths, Rituals and Beliefs in Tibet vol. I: pp. 509-10, Kathmandu 1998; this paper originally appeared in French, in the compendium Lhasa, lieu du divin: La capitale des Dala-Lama au 17e sicle edited by Francoise Pommaret, Geneva 1997). Helena Norberg-Hodge - Tibetan culture as a model of ecological sustainability: based on field research in Ladakh, we assume. Graham E. Clarke - Tradition, modernity, and enviromental change in Tibet. Toni Huber - Shangri-la in exile. Representations of Tibetan identity and transnational culture. Jamyang Norbu - Behind the lost horizon. Demystifying Tibet. Dagyab Kyabgn rinpoche - Buddhism in the West and the image of Tibet.
In the concluding essay 'Between Shangri-la and feudal oppression. Attempting a synthesis' (hl), convenor-editors Thierry Dodin and Heinz Rather pull together the multifarious threads of former themes.

Getting Real About Tibet
By James S. Taylor
This is a great book if you want to learn more about the reality of Tibet, rather than the numerous romantic myths that have been spawned about it in the West. Having lived from my teens to mid-Twenties in a Canadian community where Tibetans were resettled, I can tell you first hand that they are no more good or bad in general than any other people group. Reading a book like this will save you a lot of wasted time in building up fantasies and having them disappointed. It will help you deal with the more obvious problems, like Lobsang Rampa's fictions, as well as gain a more balanced view of the often over-stated claims about Tibetan Buddhism, environmentalism, peacefulness, and all the other projected idealisms that go into changing the actual particulars of real Tibetan society and history into the Shangri-La of Western desire.

Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment (2nd Edition), by W. Richard Stevens, Stephen A. Rago

"Stephen Rago's update is a long overdue benefit to the community of professionals using the versatile family of UNIX and UNIX-like operating environments. It removes obsolescence and includes newer developments. It also thoroughly updates the context of all topics, examples, and applications to recent releases of popular implementations of UNIX and UNIX-like environments. And yet, it does all this while retaining the style and taste of the original classic."

--Mukesh Kacker, cofounder and former CTO of Pronto Networks, Inc.

"One of the essential classics of UNIX programming."

--Eric S. Raymond, author of The Art of UNIX Programming

"This is the definitive reference book for any serious or professional UNIX systems programmer. Rago has updated and extended the classic Stevens text while keeping true to the original. The APIs are illuminated by clear examples of their use. He also mentions many of the pitfalls to look out for when programming across different UNIX system implementations and points out how to avoid these pitfalls using relevant standards such as POSIX 1003.1, 2004 edition and the Single UNIX Specification, Version 3."

--Andrew Josey, Director, Certification, The Open Group, and Chair of the POSIX 1003.1 Working Group

"Advanced Programming in the UNIX® Environment, Second Edition, is an essential reference for anyone writing programs for a UNIX system. It's the first book I turn to when I want to understand or re-learn any of the various system interfaces. Stephen Rago has successfully revised this book to incorporate newer operating systems such as GNU/Linux and Apple's OS X while keeping true to the first edition in terms of both readability and usefulness. It will always have a place right next to my computer."

For over a decade, serious C programmers have relied on one book for practical, in-depth knowledge of the programming interfaces that drive the UNIX and Linux kernels: W. Richard Stevens' Advanced Programming in the UNIX® Environment . Now, Stevens' colleague Stephen Rago has thoroughly updated this classic to reflect the latest technical advances and add support for today's leading UNIX and Linux platforms.

Rago carefully retains the spirit and approach that made this book a classic. Building on Stevens' work, he begins with basic topics such as files, directories, and processes, carefully laying the groundwork for understanding more advanced techniques, such as signal handling and terminal I/O.

Substantial new material includes chapters on threads and multithreaded programming, using the socket interface to drive interprocess communication (IPC), and extensive coverage of the interfaces added to the latest version of the POSIX.1 standard. Nearly all examples have been tested on four of today's most widely used UNIX/Linux platforms: FreeBSD 5.2.1; the Linux 2.4.22 kernel; Solaris 9; and Darwin 7.4.0, the FreeBSD/Mach hybrid underlying Apple's Mac OS X 10.3.

As in the first edition, you'll learn through example, including more than 10,000 lines of downloadable, ANSI C source code. More than 400 system calls and functions are demonstrated with concise, complete programs that clearly illustrate their usage, arguments, and return values. To tie together what you've learned, the book presents several chapter-length case studies, each fully updated for contemporary environments.

Advanced Programming in the UNIX® Environment has helped a generation of programmers write code with exceptional power, performance, and reliability. Now updated for today's UNIX/Linux systems, this second edition will be even more indispensable.

About the Author

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of noted author W. Richard Stevens. His passing is obviously a tremendous loss for the technical community, but it is a personal one for us as well. Rich was both a gifted colleague and a valued friend who will be greatly missed. We extend our sympathies to his family.

Obituary from the Arizona Daily Star:

STEVENS, W. Richard, noted author of computer books died on September 1. He is best known for his "UNIX Network Programming" series (1990, 1998, 1999), "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" (1992), and "TCP/IP Illustrated" series (1994, 1995, 1996). Richard was born in 1951 in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), where his father worked for the copper industry. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Hurley, New Mexico, Washington, DC and Phalaborwa, South Africa. Richard attended Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia. He received a B.SC. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1973, and an M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1982) in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona. He moved to Tucson in 1975 and from then until 1982 he was employed at Kitt Peak National Observatory as a computer programmer. From 1982 until 1990 he was Vice President of Computing Services at Health Systems International in New Haven, CT, moving back to Tucson in 1990. Here he pursued his career as an author and consultant. He was also an avid pilot and a part-time flight instructor during the 1970's.

He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sally Hodges Stevens; three wonderful children, Bill, Ellen and David; sister, Claire Stevens of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Bob and wife Linda Stevens of Dallas, TX; nieces, Laura, Sarah, Collette, Christy; and nephew, Brad. He is predeceased by his parents, Royale J. Stevens (1915-1984); and Helen Patterson Stevens (1916-1997). Helen lived in Tucson from 1991-1997, and Royale lived here in the early 1930's attending Tucson High School while his father was treated for TB at the Desert Sanitorium (now TMC). The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Richard's name to Habitat for Humanity, 2950 E. 22nd Street, Tucson, AZ 85713. A memorial service for Richard will be held at St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church on Tuesday, September 7th at 12:00 noon. Following the service there will be a reception in the Murphy Gallery of the Church. Please wear colorful clothing to the service; Richard loved colors.

W. Richard Stevens was an acknowledged UNIX and networking expert and the highly-respected author of several books. He was also a sought-after instructor and consultant.

Stephen A. Rago, one of the Bell Laboratories developers who built UNIX System V, Release 4, currently works as a manger at EMC, specializing in file servers and file systems.

Introduction

Rich Stevens and I first met through an e-mail exchange when I reported a typographical error in his first book, UNIX Network Programming. He used to kid me about being the person to send him his first errata notice for the book. Until his death in 1999, we exchanged e-mail irregularly, usually when one of us had a question we thought the other might be able to answer. We met for dinner at USENIX conferences and when Rich was teaching in the area.

Rich Stevens was a friend who always conducted himself as a gentleman. When I wrote UNIX System V Network Programming in 1993, I intended it to be a System V version of Rich's UNIX Network Programming. As was his nature, Rich gladly reviewed chapters for me, and treated me not as a competitor, but as a colleague. We often talked about collaborating on a STREAMS version of his TCP/IP Illustrated book. Had events been different, we might have actually done it, but since Rich is no longer with us, revising Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment is the closest I'll ever get to writing a book with him.

When the editors at Addison-Wesley told me that they wanted to update Rich's book, I thought that there wouldn't be too much to change. Even after 13 years, Rich's work still holds up well. But the UNIX industry is vastly different today from what it was when the book was first published.

  • The System V variants are slowly being replaced by Linux. The major system vendors that ship their hardware with their own versions of the UNIX System have either made Linux ports available or announced support for Linux. Solaris is perhaps the last descendant of UNIX System V Release 4 with any appreciable market share.
  • After 4.4BSD was released, the Computing Science Research Group (CSRG) from the University of California at Berkeley decided to put an end to its development of the UNIX operating system, but several different groups of volunteers still maintain publicly available versions.
  • The introduction of Linux, supported by thousands of volunteers, has made it possible for anyone with a computer to run an operating system similar to the UNIX System, with freely available source code for the newest hardware devices. The success of Linux is something of a curiosity, given that several free BSD alternatives are readily available.
  • Continuing its trend as an innovative company, Apple Computer abandoned its old Mac operating system and replaced it with one based on Mach and FreeBSD.

Thus, I've tried to update the information presented in this book to reflect these four platforms.

After Rich wrote Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment in 1992, I got rid of most of my UNIX programmer 's manuals. To this day, the two books I keep closest to my desk are a dictionary and a copy of Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment. I hope you find this revision equally useful.

Changes from the First Edition

Rich's work holds up well. I've tried not to change his original vision for this book, but a lot has happened in 13 years. This is especially true with the standards that affect the UNIX programming interface.

Throughout the book, I've updated interfaces that have changed from the ongoing efforts in standards organizations. This is most noticeable in Chapter 2, since its primary topic is standards. The 2001 version of the POSIX.1 standard, which we use in this revision, is much more comprehensive than the 1990 version on which the first edition of this book was based. The 1990 ISO C standard was updated in 1999, and some changes affect the interfaces in the POSIX.1 standard.

A lot more interfaces are now covered by the POSIX.1 specification. The base specifications of the Single UNIX Specification (published by The Open Group, formerly X/Open) have been merged with POSIX.1. POSIX.1 now includes several 1003.1 standards and draft standards that were formerly published separately. Accordingly, I've added chapters to cover some new topics. Threads and multithreaded programming are important concepts because they present a cleaner way for programmers to deal with concurrency and asynchrony.

The socket interface is now part of POSIX.1. It provides a single interface to interprocess communication (IPC), regardless of the location of the process, and is a natural extension of the IPC chapters.

I've omitted most of the real-time interfaces that appear in POSIX.1. These are best treated in a text devoted to real-time programming. One such book appears in the bibliography.

I've updated the case studies in the last chapters to cover more relevant real-world examples. For example, few systems these days are connected to a PostScript printer via a serial or parallel port. Most PostScript printers today are accessed via a network, so I've changed the case study that deals with PostScript printer communication to take this into account.

The chapter on modem communication is less relevant these days. So that the original material is not lost, however, it is available on the book's Web site in two formats: PostScript (http://www.apuebook.com/lostchapter/modem.ps) and PDF (http://www.apuebook.com/lostchapter/modem.pdf).

The source code for the examples shown in this book is also available at www.apuebook.com. Most of the examples have been run on four platforms:
  • FreeBSD 5.2.1, a derivative of the 4.4BSD release from the Computer Systems Research Group at the University of California at Berkeley, running on an Intel Pentium processor
  • Linux 2.4.22 (the Mandrake 9.2 distribution), a free UNIX-like operating system, running on Intel Pentium processors
  • Solaris 9, a derivative of System V Release 4 from Sun Microsystems, running on a64-bit UltraSPARC IIi processor
  • Darwin 7.4.0, an operating environment based on FreeBSD and Mach, supported by Apple Mac OS X, version 10.3, on a PowerPC processor

Preface to the First Edition Introduction

This book describes the programming interface to the Unix system--the system call interface and many of the functions provided in the standard C library. It is intended for anyone writing programs that run under Unix.

Like most operating systems, Unix provides numerous services to the programs that are running -- open a file, read a file, start a new program, allocate a region of memory, get the current time-of-day, and so on. This has been termed the system call interface. Additionally, the standard C library provides numerous functions that are used by almost every C program (format a variable's value for output, compare two strings, etc.).

The system call interface and the library routines have traditionally been described in Sections 2 and 3 of the Unix Programmer 's Manual. This book is not a duplication of these sections. Examples and rationale are missing from the Unix Programmer 's Manual, and that's what this book provides.

    Unix Standards

The proliferation of different versions of Unix during the 1980s has been tempered by the various international standards that were started during the late 1980s. These include the ANSI standard for the C programming language, the IEEE POSIX family (still being developed), and the X/Open portability guide. This book also describes these standards. But instead of just describing the standards by themselves, we describe them in relation to popular implementations of the standards -- System V Release 4 and the forthcoming 4.4BSD. This provides a real-world description, which is often lacking from the standard itself and from books that describe only the standard.

    Organization of the Book

This book is divided into six parts:

An overview and introduction to basic Unix programming concepts and terminology (Chapter 1), with a discussion of the various Unix standardization efforts and different Unix implementations (Chapter 2).
  • I/O--unbuffered I/O (Chapter 3), properties of files and directories (Chapter 4), the standard I/O library (Chapter 5), and the standard system data files (Chapter 6).
  • Processes -- the environment of a Unix process (Chapter 7), process control (Chapter 8), the relationships between different processes (Chapter 9), and signals (Chapter 10).
  • More I/O -- terminal I/O (Chapter 11), advanced I/O (Chapter 12), and daemon processes (Chapter 13).
  • IPC--Interprocess communication (Chapters 14 and 15).
  • Examples--a database library (Chapter 16), communicating with a PostScript printer (Chapter 17), a modem dialing program (Chapter 18), and using pseudo terminals (Chapter 19).
  • A reading familiarity with C would be beneficial as would some experience using Unix. No prior programming experience with Unix is assumed. This text is intended for programmers familiar with Unix and programmers familiar with some other operating system who wish to learn the details of the services provided by most Unix systems.

    Examples in the Text

This book contains many examples--approximately 10,000 lines of source code. All the examples are in the C programming language. Furthermore, these examples are in ANSI C. You should have a copy of the Unix Programmer's Manual for your system handy while reading this book, since reference is made to it for some of the more esoteric and implementation-dependent features.

Almost every function and system call is demonstrated with a small, complete program. This lets us see the arguments and return values and is often easier to comprehend than the use of the function in a much larger program. But since some of the small programs are contrived examples, a few bigger examples are also included (Chapters 16, 17, 18, and 19). These larger examples demonstrate the programming techniques in larger, real-world examples.

Systems Used to Test the Examples

Unfortunately all operating systems are moving targets. Unix is no exception. The following diagram shows the recent evolution of the various versions of System V and 4.xBSD.

4.xBSD are the various systems from the Computer Systems Research Group at the University of California at Berkeley. This group also distributes the BSD Net 1 and BSD Net 2 releases -- publicly available source code from the 4.xBSD systems. SVRx refers to System V Release x from AT&T. XPG3 is the X/Open Portability Guide, Issue 3, and ANSI C is the ANSI standard for the C programming language. POSIX.1 is the IEEE and ISO standard for the interface to a Unix-like system. We'll have more to say about these different standards and the various versions of Unix in Sections 2.2 and 2.3.

In this text we use the term 4.3+BSDto refer to the Unix system from Berkeley that is somewhere between the BSD Net 2 release and 4.4BSD. At the time of this writing, 4.4BSD was not released, so the system could not be called 4.4BSD. Nevertheless a simple name was needed to refer to this system and 4.3+BSD is used throughout the text.

Most of the examples in this text have been run on four different versions of Unix:

Unix System V/386 Release 4.0 Version 2.0 (''vanilla SVR4'') from U.H. Corp. (UHC), on an Intel 80386 processor.
  • 4.3+BSD at the Computer Systems Research Group, Computer Science Division, University of California at Berkeley, on a Hewlett Packard workstation.
  • BSD/386 (a derivative of the BSD Net 2 release) from Berkeley Software Design, Inc., on an Intel 80386 processor. This system is almost identical to what we call 4.3+BSD.
  • SunOS 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 (systems with a strong Berkeley heritage but many System V features) from Sun Microsystems, on a SPARCstation SLC.
  • Numerous timing tests are provided in the text and the systems used for the test are identified.

Excellent reference and introduction to the UNIX programming environment.
    By AmazonCustomer
Two things I like about this book are

    1. The book focuses heavily on standards and portability. Throughout the book, API and implementations are described according to the SUS or XSI standards. However, to book maintains a firm grasp on reality by tracking 4 real Unix-like systems, Solaris, Linux, Mac OS X, and FreeBSD throughout and noting implementation specific exceptions and extensions where applicable.

    2. A lot of illustrative example code is included. In some cases API functions are re-implemented to make it clear exactly how it works.

APUEv2 reads quite easily as a beginner's introduction to programming in the Unix environment. However it also includes a great deal of tables, charts, and figures to make it suitable as a reference for the more experienced programmer, useful as a back-up in case the local man pages are not available.

As mentioned in the foreword, readers should be comfortable with the C language itself before attempting to dive in to Unix programming.

Where is AIX, HP/UX, among other majors?
    By Bernie
This book is a fantastic starting point in life. Some how our public schools over look teaching the fundamental skills presented in this book. We learn how to play with toys on simple computers and never really learn what we are doing.

The real strength of this book is in the definitions. We get to see the purpose and flexibility of system calls and functions. Not just use them but understand them. UNIX functions as job control or signals are explained in detail. Let's take just one item "waitpid":

The waitpid function provides three features that aren't provided by the wait function.

You will have to red the book to find out what they are. However there are examples also. Now for people with real systems like AIX all you have to do is ad a "k" to the front of the call and you have the AIX kernel function call "kwaitpid"; voila you now have an understanding that can not be found clearly in a Red Book.

It does help some to have a preunderstanding of the system do you can use the book to fill in the education holes missed when necessary.

The index is worth its weight in gold as you can find functions headers and concepts all in alphabetical order. My favorite is the definitions.

As much as I am a fan of the internet it also pays to carry the information in the form of a book. And all this book has to do is save a couple of hours and it has paid for its self.

    Predictions 2015-2016, by John Hogue

John Hogue, a world renowned authority on Nostradamus and prophetic traditions, will reveal the potential, history-changing events coming in the second half of 2015 as this year may be the last chance to begin reforming monetary, economic, and political systems. Otherwise, time begins running out to avoid a disastrous future that might ultimately entail a threat of human extinction from planetary climate change. Hogue will take us further, into the year 2016, and how it could become Year One of a 20-year period of “The Great Unraveling” as foreseen by Nostradamus.

Let that not dishearten you, cautions Hogue. In his most epic examination yet of worldwide prophetic trends, Hogue presents in breathtaking detail a thought-provoking encounter with tomorrow’s many potentials, where even the scariest future collapse of old systems of order and centralization can also be cause for the rise of new people movements and positive socio-economic and political revolutions. These and other unexpected reversals of fate and fortune are waiting that may nullify many clear and present threats to human survival and individual freedom that seem set against our pursuit of a happier, and golden, future.

“I have known John Hogue for fifteen years, during which time he has appeared on my radio program many, many times. Every year, he predicts on the program in the first quarter and we ‘hold his feet to the fire’ during the summer. And every year, he proves to be fireproof. He’s accurate. Uncannily accurate.”

Some larger concerns not addressed. Still, an interesting read.
    By Gary S
While John Hogue is a good writer I felt some topics and concerns missing in this book. Prior to this I read two books by Mark Dice. The secret societies in the world, the elite illuminati and New World Order (which senior President HW Bush bragged about years ago), and many others including our country forefathers, have had an agenda going back hundreds of years. Along with other worldwide powerful groups. One of those is the elimination of over 80% of the population. Their reasoning is world over population. But in the end the illuminati (including corporations and world banks) will "inherit" everything. This agenda certainly has a lot to do with what is going on, why the media doesn't report it, and why it progresses. Add to this the dumbed down sheep-like people, there really isn't much hope for change in time. We have run out of time. This book does not address any of this. The geo-engineering, the chemtrails, HAARP, EMF pulse attacks vs. nuclear, etc.. And these are real, not made up by conspiracy followers. While I found this to be an interesting book, I would have seen more credibility had these areas been included in some way. Still, I will follow his predictions laid out and see if they hold true.

More than predictions--this is a book for our time.
    By Ray F
Predictions 2015-2016 is seer and prophecy scholar John Hogue's description of what's in store for the world based on his research of contemporary events, astrological readings, and insights offered by his "oracle." It provides a good overview of the status of world events, governments, economies, and climate for the time period specified and beyond. That overview stays true to the Predictions part of the title in that it contains accounts of what will happen, and of what can happen, based on choices made in this prophetically significant time. Those choices and outcomes are further illuminated by passages of prophetic writings from past seers--Nostradamus foremost among them.

In this book, as in his other written works, Mr. Hogue uses astrology as his chief tool for prognostication. Consequently, you get passages like:

"It sits at 21 degrees Scorpio in the Twelfth House, conjoined Venus and my Ascendant at 20 degrees."

Don't be daunted by that, though, because most such passages aren't so astrologically technical and Mr. Hogue provides layman explanations for those that are. This doesn't detract from the book's message. It even enhances it in much the same way a book involving sailing ships might use nautical terms and so provide a salty ambiance for its story (re: Two Years Before the Mast).

You don't have to "believe in astrology" to get the value of this book. I've long thought that people sensitive to the supra-dimensional aspect of reality (i.e., "psychics") usually have some kind of tool such as astrology, the tarot, palm-reading, Ouija boarding, etc, to facilitate their access to the numinous. Mr. Hogue seems to endorse this idea when, in regard to the operational influence on human activities by the stars and planets, he says:

"Perhaps they have no direct influence on humanity at all, but they inspire the seer like a catalyst."

If you are open to this view, then you will obtain the optimum value from Predictions 2015-2016 and Mr. Hogue's inspiration. And that value covers a lot of ground. In twelve chapters and an epilogue, Mr. Hogue touches on most of the events, momentums, and situations operating in the world today. For each, he offers an overview of its history and current status, relates the astrological perspective, and adds any further word on the subject from his oracle. He then offers his predictions, which may be a declarative statement of what he believes will happen ("I predict that..."), or his view of what trends will develop, or what the choices are and their potential consequences.

Without giving anything away, the areas covered in the book include the fate of the American Empire (and the potentiality of nuclear war with Russia), world economy and the control of it by global corporations and their "trade deals," a future defined by decentralization in technology and politics, the 2016 US presidential election and its likely winner, an American rebellion against the 1% police state, EU hubris and Greek economic problems, the possibilities for a "blood" pandemic, the BRICS challenge to the West, conflict stemming from the crisis in Ukraine, Middle East issues including the rise of ISIS, and global warming leading to climate change with all its miseries.

These are heavy subjects and contemplating them honestly can be depressing. Mr. Hogue acknowledges this in his introduction and promises the reader that his book will not sugar-coat any of it:

"Numerous almanacs and forecasts for 2015 are available that will mollify you, that will “Mary Poppins” to you this bitter pill of a year with a spoon full of sugary BS to make the medicine go down. This book won’t do that."

And it doesn't. Even so, Mr. Hogue's prose is characteristically witty with a liberal and unapologetic use of insightful puns scattered throughout. He even alters his "voice" from street-slang to poetic, as he deems fit, to make his points. It often includes re-worded popular songs. All this adds a lightness to keep the subject matter from becoming so dark that it gets overwhelming, and it helps carry readers along through the book's expansive list of topics.

Now, the potential problem with a book of predictions is that it can be viewed simply as a game where the predictions are compiled and checked for accuracy to produce a "score." A high score might earn the author the title of "pretty good predictor," where a low score might lead to a dismissal of the book and anything else the author says. While such "scoring" is possible, it is secondary, especially in this book where so many important issues are discussed with candor and buttressed with careful research. I recommend that readers think past "scoring" and consider what Mr. Hogue says about things like the potential for nuclear war erupting from the Ukraine and Iran situations, or the threat of human extinction from global warming.

Predictions 2015-2016 is a book written for a specific time. Mr. Hogue says in the introduction that that time is one of "last chances." Humanity must make some critical decisions, now, to facilitate a much needed restart. This time will feel, he says, "something like death is approaching...to be supplanted by the unfamiliar, the new." And further, "A birth is coming out of this death." This book should help you see the fitful death coming for nations, systems, and grooves of thought that have run their course, before there is a birth of anything better.

I try not to do spoilers in my reviews so I have not given here much of Mr. Hogue's conclusions or specific predictions. I urge you to make those discoveries for yourself by reading Predictions 2015-2016 and I predict that, if you do so with an open mind and honest desire to learn, you'll be richly rewarded. But I warn you: never mind looking at the future, even looking honestly at the present is not a task for the faint-hearted. Seeing things as they are, is tough and can lead to despair.

Mr. Hogue addresses this issue of reality-prompted despair in his book's epilogue, which is by itself, worth the cost of the book. Its impact is loaded by the preceding twelve chapters so don't skip right to it. You should read the book chapter-by-chapter, taking in what is said in each, and then meditatively read the epilogue. That exercise will, in my opinion, bring you to the closest facility for hope that I can find in this dark age, and so help you face the future.

A leftist political rant sprinkled with predictions
    By Darmony91
Though this book is about prophecy, it’s really difficult to review it apart from it political views. Hogue is an ageing hippie with a ideology politically stuck in the 60s. America is totally controlled by multinational corporations. Both political parties are under their thumb, ditto mainstream news media, and virtually everyone else, except of course, him. This fact is reiterated over and over again to the point of nagging. Now I would think since Washington is hopelessly compromised, he would like the current gridlock there, since nothing good could come from such a corrupt federal government. But no, gridlock is a bad thing too. His predictions seem to be pretty accurate, and I should give him more than one star for that, but I take it away because of his god-awful puns. Anyway, one minor prediction interested me. Both he and Peter Schiff, a right wing libertarian economic columnist, predicted the economic downturn in 2008. Now in the current economy, Hogue predicts there will be no QE4, while Schiff says QE4 is inevitable. It will be interesting to see whether Hogue’s oracle or Schiff’s economic theory is right.

Great Tool For Last Minute Learning
    By Jared Robinson
I found this very helpful while trying to study for the AP Gov test. I did not take this course, so I relied mostly on this book. Also, my attempt at this was to learn (enough of) this course in a two weeks span. It was very useful as it provided bullets points, sections with main ideas, and other important information. The thing I liked the most about it was that the book gave me a rundown of how the AP Gov test works, and what I would need to do to get a certain score. The book it specifically based around teaching the most important information. They decide this by looking at previous years of tests and breaking down what questions were being asked and how often. It was good to know that I'm not just reading over information that probably wont be needed to be known for the test.

As an added bonus, it helps to also watch the Crash Course channel's YouTube series about AP Gov. There are about 50 videos total, and the series is a little more general and can be used as a good review. It serves as a nice compliment to the AP Book.

For classes like Ap. Us Goverment
    By Diana.J
For classes like Ap.Us Goverment, it is mostly memorization, unlike AP U.S history or AP Euro, where you have to explain alot of things. Having a compilation of things to memorize was so helpful. I ended up just using this book for both my class and test prep and it was phenomenal. It is succint -- it goes straight to the point and picks the terms you should already know. All the cases are monumental. I also bought the princeton Review but found book to be confusing and finding vocabulary at the back of the book in glossary seemed like an unnecsary step, when they could have provided it right next to the term. I read the whole book in 2 days before the test, and felt that it covered most questions from the test. beside 4-5 questions. Highly recommend, if you are already taking the course with it.

Short and Simple Yet Good Supplemental Source
    By Brittany Eng
This AP US Government & Poltiics prep book was pretty fun to read, I have to admit. It is organized in a way that is easy for your eyes and helps you get the primary definitions and events down. I used this as a supplement so I can review things last minute (around 2 days prior to the AP test) and it helped to refresh my memory of the primary concepts.

I wouldn't use this book as my only source of preparation, but I would use it as a supplement. It does not really expand on the concepts and terms as much as I would have liked, but considering that this is a condensed book, it does as much as it can to prepare you for your AP exam.

Overall, I'm glad I made this purchase.
