Great Overview -- All Good Information, No Fluff

This is one of the best introductions I've ever read on making an independent feature film. It covers everything from writing the script to distribution in foreign markets and does so clearly, concisely, entertainingly and within 238 pages. As a film editor, I can say the chapter on editing basics is right on. The sections on money (both raising it and receiving it once your movie is distributed) are both eye-openers. It's a very realistic, honest source of information about making an independent feature.
As for criticism: Written in 1997, the book gives a pretty short shrift to DV, but it does admit that things will change. Also, it focuses primarily on features and not shorts. And at 230 pages, it's still just an introduction, but honestly, I can't think of a better introduction to give to a first time filmmaker -- who's either starting her first short or making that first feature.

This is the best book available on independent filmmaking.

As an aspiring filmmaker, I've read more than twenty books on directing and producing independent films. Merritt's book is easily the best, most comprehensive, and most revealing of them all. He tells you everything you need to know to finance, write, produce, direct, and sell a movie. I especially love all of the great "underground" tips about how to get free film stock and equipment, how to avoid permits, how to choose the right people, and a non-nonsense guide to distributors. Eveything is here, from catering tips to bank loans to guaranteed foreign video sales. This book will save me thousands of dollars as I make my first feature-length movie. I highly recommend it, as opposed to or in addition to film school. (I went to film school for 4 years for $65,000 and I learned MUCH more practical, real world, current advice with this $20 book.)

The Best How-To Book On Indie Film

After "The Blair Witch Project" and similar success stories, I was looking for a good general book on film production that included all the real dope on how the best known people have made successful low-budget movies. I was amazed by how much clear, precise info "Film Production: The Complete Uncensored Guide to Independent Filmmaking" has, such as precise budgets, deal-negotiating tips, crew member roles, distribution company reviews, and on and on. I also liked the way the book is organized. It takes you from the script and raising the money all the way through all the details of pre-production, production, and editing to selling the movie, promoting, and beyond. It answered all my questions (from stupid to tough) along the way.

The decade of the 1970s was a unique, fascinating, depressing and exciting period all at the same time. A lot of things associated with the 1970s, such as bell bottoms, leisure suits, Jimmy Hoffa, pet rocks, lava lamps, mood rings, Nehru jackets, disco music, and Richard Nixon, didn't survive that turbulent decade. Neither did the World Football League. Like the decade itself, the WFL was at once unique, fascinating, depressing, and exciting. It was a slick, mod, hip alternative to an established entity, the National Football League. It featured the Dickerrod, King Corcoran, bouncing checks, yellow footballs, court orders, magenta and orange uniforms, color-coded pants, Papergate, and singular team nicknames that one scribe said made the WFL sound more like a listing of Indian folklore than a football league. But, also like the decade itself, while the league did not survive the 70s, the wild, zany and hilariously true stories associated with the WFL survive to this day. The WFL never ceased to amaze and entertain. As Alex Hawkins, color commentator for the WFL's Game of the Week broadcasts so aptly said, "The whole thing was so bizarre, that you just had to love it.". All of these stories are chronicled in "WIFFLE" -- a book that can be best described as a 50-yard-line ticket to a real-life Theater of the Absurd.

About the Author
Mark Speck has been researching pro football for over 25 years. He has written numerous articles for the Professional Football Researchers Association's publication, The Coffin Corner, and has contributed his time and efforts to several football encyclopedias and the official WFL website. He has also worked as co-author of The World Football League ncyclopedia with Tod Maher and is the author of a book on the 1974 Florida Blazers entitled "
...and a dollar short". When he is not researching pro football, Mark works full-time as a Quality Assurance Specialist for the nonprofit organization Able2 in Elmira, New York. Mark lives in Horseheads, New York, with is still very understanding and patient wife, Elise, and their Pug.

the editor wiffed on Wiffle

This is a "qualified" five-star project edited in a three-star way hence I'm giving it a four. Let me clarify a bit. The research is top notch. The main problem is the decision rather than let the two seasons flow as a whole, the author covers each World Football League season then does a team-by-team season review. Although these are interesting with two teams playing in a game (well, duh!), you get, for example the author just repeating himself way too much. In other words, if we take the chapter of the 1974 Birmingham Americans and he's discussing a game vs. the Chicago Fire. Then in the 1974 Chicago Fire chapter that same game will be covered. It...makes...no...sense to do the book this way.

Even worse is he has all the team's chapters in alphabetical order, you, for instance, start reading about the 1974 Charlotte Hornets and quickly realize you had better skip ahead and read about the 1974 New York Stars first because that's where the franchise started playing the season. After they bailed on NYC they move to Charlotte.

Throw in the fact that this is a hardcover book and its cost, why no pictures? There are none. I kid you not. Not even middle-page spread on one of the most colorful leagues ever thought up.

Anyway mindboggling because the quality of the writing is there at times although I grew so bored with it that it became a slog to get through each team's soul sucking seasons. The author does, in a good way, suck you into some of the great characters from players to coaches to wacky owners. This book just needed a serious editor to steer author Mark Speck to organize the book a bit more logically than what I think he must think is logical.

This book is a fantastic record of a league with an incredible story. This should be required reading for any Sports Management class as an example of how not to run a league. Had I not been in my early 20s during this era I would have a hard time believing all that took place during this leagues existence. Hopefully somebody will someday produce a similar book about the USFL.

Interesting take on the failed WFL. I particularly enjoyed the behind the scenes operations that went on in the league office and within each of the teams. I could have done without the game by game reporting of each team throughout each season.

Er selbst entscheidet, welche Teile eines Bildes er zuerst wahrnimmt und welche sp�ter. Man kann also sagen, dass die sprachliche Kommunikation sendergesteuert ist und die bildhafte Kommunikation empf�ngergesteuert.
Bei der Bildkommunikation wird im ersten Schritt die Botschaft direkt aus dem Zeichen selbst dekodiert. Hierzu hat der Mensch fest verankerte Geb�rden die er instinktiv anwendet. Schickt der Sender ein Signal mit Hilfe von Geb�rdenzeichen, so wird die Botschaft vom Empf�nger unmissverst�ndlich angenommen. In Kinderzeichnungen beispielsweise findet man h�ufig linienartige Sonnenstrahlen. Hier wird die Linie als Symbolik daf�r verwendet, dass die Sonne w�rmend auf uns Menschen strahlt.

Grundsatz Imageryforschung:
Die Imageryforschung geht davon aus, dass der Mensch �u�ere Einfl�sse durch verschiedene Verarbeitungskan�le aufnimmt. Einerseits geschieht dies durch verbale, andererseits durch nonverbale Kommunikation. Der Rezipient gewinnt folglich verschiedene Eindr�cke woraus innere Bilder im Kopf generiert werden. Je st�rker diese inneren Bilder verankert sind, desto besser ist die Erinnerung an den damit verbundenen Gegenstand. Imagerystrategien sind somit ein wichtiges werbliches Mittel um Markennamen oder Produktneuheiten dauerhaft im Kopf des Kunden zu verankern...

An ever-increasing demand for organs, with over 100,000 people on waiting lists, has driven a relentless search for new sources of organs. In 1995 the American Medical Association supported taking organs from anencephalic infants, children born without brains. In 1999 the Chinese government began removing organs from members of the politically outcast religious group Falun Gong, making a lucrative profit from sales to foreigners. Recently in Belgium physicians have euthanized a patient by removing her organs.

The search for fresh organs began much earlier, in 1968, when death was redefined, so that well-preserved organs could be removed from brain dead individuals. The early 1990s saw the introduction of donation after cardiac death, in which organs are taken from individuals whose hearts could still be resuscitated. Over the last two decades various countries have attempted markets in the sale of organs.

Each of these sources of organs raises ethical concerns. Is brain death truly death, or by taking the heart of the brain-dead individual do we thereby kill him? When a person's heart stops beating is it permissible to prepare his organs for transplantation, even though we could choose to resuscitate him? Can we take organs from an infant without a brain? If a woman no longer wishes to live, can she donate her organs to others in an act of beneficent suicide? Is a market in organs acceptable?

These questions and others are thoughtfully probed in this collection of essays, which features articles from theologians, philosophers, physicians, biomedical ethicists, and an attorney.

Julissa is a lucrative realtor with a successful boyfriend. On the outside looking in, they appear to be a happy, power couple. They have nice cars and live in a lavish home. Julissa wants to be married, but her boyfriend is more concerned with making money. She's having a hard time remaining loyal when someone comes along and gives her everything she desires. Which direction will she take?

This was my second Ambrielle Kirk read. I had a few issues with this one. There were a few places I had to reread because of typos. I had to make sure I didn't miss something. Like the last read, I felt some things were rushed. I also felt like I was left hanging about some of the characters. This was a quick read that started off slow and became predictable. With the few issues, "Risking It All" was an okay read.

Mixed feelings

Let me start by saying this was a free read and I am usually prepared to be dissapointed, but this was not the case. The story was long enough to connect to the characters,the sexual tension between Julissa and Quintin was palpable. The sex scenes were plenty and well written.

There were some charachter flaws in Julissa and Quniton that made me struggle a little bit with this story - **spoilers** she was cheating on her live in boyfriend with Quinton, although her boyfriend was abusive and used her like a live in slave, this still bothered me a little. She would have moments of guilt and moral upheaval but would still sleep with Quinton any time they were together. She accepted an engagement ring from her boyfriend while having this affair. Quinton's character wasn't much better in this love triangle because he pursued her aggresively with the knowledge she was in a committed 3 year relationship.

The only other negative I have is that I wish the situation with her best friend was touch on a bit more and not rushed at the end of the story.

The author did do a good job of making me feel for them, their passion, their need to be together, their eventual love and made me want to see them have their happy ending against their questionable beginnings and this had a lot to do with Julissa's boyfriend / fiance being written so unlikable that you wanted to see him get knocked down a peg. All and all a pretty good read with a lot of sensuality, some drama and a happy ending thrown into the mix.

You, Me and He?

I had a few problems with this story Julissa and Quenton knowing that they were both in committed relationships had no problem cheating on their significant others. I kept trying to wrap my head around the fact that Julissa's boyfriend Michael who was a self centered and selfish as they came yet she still stayed with him even when he was abusive physically and mentally towards her. She had no back bone in my oppinion. And her friends Christina and Myra had their heads in the clouds as well how they kept telling Julissa how lucky she was to have gotten such a "Catch". I just kept rolling my eyes.
And don't let me get started on Quenton or "Q" as he preferred to be called knowing he too was already in a relationship which he neglected to reveal to Julissa until he had no choice. I kept saying WTF? This story had so many twists and turns that it wasn't even funny. Despite thoes flaws I did enjoy the story and would highly recommend this book because it was well written and the story flowed well.

Nope, not for me.

Not my cup of tea. I did a more detailed review on my blog, but here's the short summary of my impression:

As a female dominant, this was a huge turn off. I never really felt any love or chemistry from this- it was more about the idea of a fantasy dominatrix who exists to make men feel humiliated and submissive, than anything about female power or satisfaction. Our protagonist, Kelly, had the personality of a shark and I never got the impression she valued her partner in the least.

That's the real problem about *being* a female dom- the porn sells us as angry, entitled lunatics (spoiled? the marketing copy calls the heroine spoiled?!) and never seems to touch on why we might want or like male subs. Rather the reverse, as this book does, the more submissive Christopher becomes, the less Kelly is attracted to him.

Just once I'd like to read a F/m story like this where it didn't sound like the dom was so disgusted by her partner she was going to vomit.

A well written story with despicable characters

If you are into female dominants who despise the men who serve them, or male submissives who take no pride in their service; by all means buy and read this book right now. I prefer dominant women who actually like and care about men. I also like submissive men who have some pride in themselves and in their service.

This book is well written and edited but the female supremacist tone and the characters that I came to despise made for a less than enjoyable read. It's not my cup of tea but if those elements of character and story appeal to you by all means grab this book.

A thrilling ride into submission

This is without a doubt the best piece of female domination erotica I have read. Every sentence seems finely composed and tuned to thrill both mind and body. The author makes it perfectly understandable how Chris is mesmerized, seduced and enslaved by Kelly. His description of her - her thoughts as well as her words and actions - seems to do her inteligence justice. And I have a very clear image of her statuesque body in my mind. A wonderfully cruel and sexy mistress and goddess.

This is a very well written book, and the editing, and attention to detail and nuance, make it a joy to read.

One can only hope there is a Mrs. Lavalle who can - with loving firmness - focus Mr. Lavalle's efforts on finnishing part 2, as a service to all aspiring Godesses and slaves. And the many books to come ...
