Catholic after all

I converted to Catholicism 8 years ago and I've struggled to find my "place" in the Church since that Easter Vigil. I had too much faith to be any kind of progressive Catholic and I lacked those cradle bona fides to even remotely understand what compels Traditional Catholics. I was beginning to doubt that I could be a Catholic at all.

Thank you Mr. Weigel. I read your book and discovered that I've been right where I should be all along, in Christ, and in His Church. I am Catholic after all.

Great Book on 'Evangelical Catholicism' /'The New Evangelization'/ 'Vatican II Catholicism'

George Weigel is one of my favorite Catholic essayists, political and cultural commentators. In this book he doesnt disappoint and delivers a top notch book which for a great many Catholics will become a handbook or a guiding light. Al Kresta calls the book prophetic. Another reviewer(Archbishop) called it a 'blueprint for the re-evangelization of the West'. I couldnt agree more. I see in the author, and in this book, someone who has finally wrestled with and pinned down what the abstraction 'The New Evangelization' is all about. Although George Weigel rarely mentions the term 'The New Evangelization' in his book, it is implicit within the book and synonymous with 'Evangelical Catholic/Catholicism'. And, of course, all this starts with you and me.

George gives us a bit of a rundown of 'modernism' and 'post-modernism', its anti-religion posture and how as the predominant culture it has completely pummeled 'Counter Reformation Catholicism', also known as 'Council of Trent' Catholicism, and has left the Catholic Church in a shambles dominated by 'progressive' vs. 'traditional', 'liberal' vs. 'conservative' and 'pre vs. post Vatican II' fights and discussions which are not the essential fights, as the Church should be centered on neither but 'Evangelical Catholicism'. Although I am a conservative, surprisingly true to form this book delivers and enables one to focus on the future and perhaps finally unfurl some fingers on these fights and labels and move forward on a new transcendent realignment. Albeit a new realignment with a brighter and better label: 'Evangelical Catholicism'.

According to George Weigel, "Evangelical Catholics are fed by both Word and Sacrament--by a daily reading of the Bible and regular reception of the Eucharist and the sacrament of Penance--are men and women being formed by the obedience of faith into a genuine freedom." Whereas "Counter-Reformation Catholicism" like Evangelical Catholicism emphasized a rich devotional life centered on Mary, the saints, and the Sacred Heart. But it did not lay much stress on sanctification through a regular encounter with the Bible and frequent reception of holy communion. The author George details many differences between the two, but notes the strength of Counter-Reformation Catholicism was its ability to create culture, sometimes hunkered down culture with large walls around it--ghettos with religious and ethnic distinctions. Wherever Counter-Reformation Catholicism traveled around the world post 1500's, it created local and enduring Catholic cultures,resistant to erosion, until finally after 500 years the age of modernism came and deconstructed, subsumed and replaced all those Catholic cultures with itself. Hence, the sad state of our embittered and embattled Catholic Church.

What George Weigel does do is describe what a true to doctrine, biblical based, reform-oriented, culture-forming Evangelical Catholicism should be, properly formed by Vatican II. George further explains that Vatican II really started with Pope Leo XIII(Papacy: 1873-1903) and his confrontation with modernism. He further details that the linchpin document of Vatican II was 'Dei Verbum' and it lays the groundwork not only for deep reform but for the 'New Evengelization' and the new 'Evangelical Catholic'. In our society, in our culture, confronting a disbelieving world with the revelation that God has revealed himself and comes down to us to meet us with our belief, cannot be successful with statements like 'The Catholic Church teaches...'. This is met with by most unbelievers in this 'modern' or 'post-modern' world with anti-authoritarian alarm bells and is a non-starter. Catholic evangelism and consequently the 'Evangelical Catholic' must be biblically based confronting in all charity the world with the actions of your belief and with sayings like 'The Gospel reveals...'. A statement like 'The Gospel reveals...', might be met with initial hostility or skepticism, but Gods truth, the Word, cannot be met with indifference. In essence this book provides a template for the next 500 years for 'The New Evangelization--Vatican II--Evangelical' Catholicism.

clear and persuasive thinking!

Weigel is one of the few authors with the depth and experience to tackle such a vast topic and to do so credibly. For the last several years it seemed as if the choice for he future of the Church was between liberals and conservatives. Now, Weigel argues that neither of these are the likely future path for the Church. Liberals want us to join the liberal protestant camp which has already shown it is going nowhere and has a weak following. Conservatives who want us to return to the days of the counter-Reformation are living in a time warp which ignores present day circumstances. The third option of Evangelical Catholicism both returns the Church to its Gospel beginnings and prepares it to deal with contemporary issues in a neaningful way. A seriously good read.

Great resource. Bargain for the price

Really a well done book with good quality pictures showing how to apply the theories. Other books cost 5 times as much for similar information.

I went to the local library to get a lighting guide. It was from early 2000s but already outdated. My hubby and I love LEDs and other efficient lighting solutions. We're both enginerds. This book is right up our alley. It shows us the art to lighting, as well as all the technical stuff. So glad I bought it!

So many great tips for bassists in this material

Not great for Kindle

I love Carol Kaye's personality and musicianship-- but this book unfortunately isn't that great. I've been playing bass for almost 20 years and wanted to see what she had to say. It's got some good advice if you're just starting out-- but you'll need to read music, since all the sample exercises she provides are in musical notation, not tab. Furthermore, on a Kindle the charts are too small to read well, so even if you can read music it can be difficult to make out what is what, and the added notes on the charts can be hard to make out.

It's also short-- I literally read the thing in about 15 minutes. Working through the exercises I'm sure you could spend months with, but the text itself is minimal.

All in all, probably a decent resource if you can read music and want to work through it, and for the price I'm not too upset, but it's not a great "book".

Carol Kaye's book on the electric bass plus Bass Lines 1 and 2 - As an Ebook Bundle? How do I love thee? Let me count the ways!

Carol is a legend, an institution. The way she approaches playing music and the way her contemporaries approached playing music, is a dying art. I have been enriched and inspired studying her material. She is at once, encouraging and straightforward in her ways. You do it her way, because she's been there, and you will succeed, because she is a great teacher. Now for the content:

This is old school learning - sheet music, sight reading. Time and rhythm. If you need help with either of these, I suggest that you add on the CD's that she sells for these books. This will especially be inspiring to those who are familiar with Carol's work. Her bass lines are in sheet music. No TABS. Not a tab to be found for miles. Rather than teach scales and chords, her goal as a teacher is "setting a fire under a student to WANT to play good imaginative bass figures" and I can attest to that.

The first book covers her bio and then gets into the basics of reading music, in a brief but concise format. If you can count, then with practice you can work through the basics as the counts and subdivisions are clearly marked. She notates examples of bass patterns from a 12 bar one she calls "Easy Bass Pattern" to one she terms "Boogaloo" which formed the basis of a lot of her understanding and thinking to the bass. There are pop lines, gospel lines, R&B lines, Motown lines, historically rich and diverse lines such as Bo Diddley, and Memphis and Nashville lines. She also exposes the student to Latin and Bossa Nova which also formed a core part of her concepts of playing bass. In short, if you sat in 50 years ago and learned at the feet of the greats, this is what you would have been exposed to.

On a digital device if you double tap the sheet music it will zoom in, and that made such a nice touch for playing her examples. If you have a tablet, you won't necessarily need this feature, but on my iPhone 6 and Amazon kindle app, where I used this, the double tap feature proved to be very important.

She goes quite a bit into techniques, with very detailed and nuanced recommendations. She is a noted bass pick user, and accordingly she goes into her preferences for that style, as well as a breakdown on down and up strokes. She breifly shares "special knowledge" items, none of which go into real depth, but they do provide insight upon areas the beginning bass player might want to focus upon. The material in this book was written ages ago, and the grainy photos and such illustrate that point, but it is timeless at the same time, because the meat and value of the material taught transcends the time and technology, and is still is very applicable today. Still, don't be looking for a "Modern Book", this isn't that. This like opening up a book of lost wisdom.

The gradually challenging studies will take a while for most people to exhaust. This will not be a book you complete right away but when you come out the other side you will be a different bass player and person.

Many of her examples are in fact, classic Bass Lines that she is known for, and her insights into the creation of those lines, and the legends that she played with, are an education in themselves. Bass Lines 1 and 2 are a continuation into the exploration of her many signature lines, and studies, into the aforementioned "buggaloo" styles, as well as various time studies. In short if you want to learn at the wisdom of one of the greatest and most prolific bass players in all of recorded history, buy this book. Buy all her books.

But please, make sure that you are ready to learn sight reading, and devote the time that it takes, or at least have a teacher to sit in with you and go through these things together. I hope that this insight into this helps you determine if this is a good book for you.

The unoffical guide is definetly unoffical. It is the only book I have found that explains the home buying as a professional friend would. It contains a copy of the actual documents the banks and mortgage brokers use. The process takes you through the steps of getting prepared physically and mentally, financial aspects,what to shop for, closing, then moving in and fixing it up. It's the only book I've read that gives specific details of how to fix or work with credit problems. If you are a first time or any time buyer I strongly suggest the unoffical guide to buying a home.

The best of the four home-buying books I read or skimmed. The key is that it is unbiased and written from the buyer's perspective, usually with humor. Most other books are not. Exposes a lot of the unseen motives from the various players in the process, particularly real estate agents. Has lots of useful tips and is more comprehensive than most similar books.
It looks like the home real estate industry is changing rapidly with the MLS/Internet and discount realtors popping up. It seems I've seen more "for sale by owner" signs and/or discount realtor signs than standard realtor signs during my recent home search. It is clear that it no longer costs a realtor 5-7% of home price to market a house with Internet (especially expensive ones), so something has to give somewhere. They ought to update this book every few years.

You won't get bamboozled by all the hype you might hear from loan officers (as I did the last time the last time I bought a home). The insider information I got from this book was fantastic -- and easy to understand!
Even though I've now bought my dream home with the aid of this book, Perlis's suggestions keep coming to the forefront. I'm following the book's advice on how to maintain an older home, how to make space more functional, and how to maximize my home's value with a minimum of cash. As with everything else in this book, the author is right on target.
(By the way, the correct title is "The Unofficial Guide to Buying a Home," not "Your First Home," as Amazon advertises. In fact, any homebuyer, however experienced, will find this a most helpful and valuable book.)

A Must Read! You Won't Regret This Series!

This set includes the trilogy, along with the extra book titled, "Four". I actually recommend reading Four first. It's the comets set. My 13 year old triplet boys started reading this series in school. They couldn't stop talking about it, so I bought this series for them, and I even read it myself. It's very, very good. The movie is pretty good too; although, the books are a lot more detailed. I highly recommend this series. I would caution for younger readers as the two main characters have some heated moments. Nothing that heavy, but on the line. I wouldn't want my 8 year old reading something like that. I hope this review has been helpful for the parents out there. All in all.. Definitely a great series! A Must Read!

Good story-telling that also makes you think

We checked out Divergent from our local library for my grandson, but my daughter and I enjoyed it also. We definitely wanted to read the rest of the trilogy, so when I found this set that also includes the bonus book Four, I pre-ordered it. My daughter and grandson have finished the entire set and I am almost through Allegiant. I highly recommend this trilogy to any reader 13+ who enjoys science fiction, adventure, stories set in the future, or just plain old good story-telling that will also make you think. I would also recommend this as a good series for a family to read and discuss together.

Great to start, nosedive by the end

This book series was a rather weird read for me, considering I have read and seen other dystopian movies and books such as The Hunger Games, and jumping into something like this definitely highlighted the cliches that run rampant in all of them. Despite all of this, I actually enjoyed the first two Divergent novels and I enjoyed the film when it came out. The first two books weren't entirely original, but they weren't bad either. I enjoyed reading them.

Allegiant is where things took a nosedive for me. The entire plot line of the outside the fence (which I won't spoil) didn't really feel like a good plot to me, in fact, it felt like Roth had another idea, but it was rejected, and she had to shoehorn a new one in. The ending wasn't great either, and to me felt a bit rushed and forced. This series gave me high hopes, until the third book. I have not read Four yet, nor do I plan to for a while, before I get over the fact that the series was great, until the end.

Fantastic book!

This of course was a mandatory book for my class but I love it.
It breaks every aspect of med-surg down for the student.
The best part of this book is that there's a book code in the front cover and if you log in following the directions it links you straight to the book. There you can watch videos that explain everything, there's quizzes per chapter, and even NCLEX review questions. This book has been a major part of my success as a student nurse! I recommend teachers to consider using this book when assigning one for a semester!

Excellent Buy

I bought this book for my med surg class that will be starting in the summer. It has helped me get through basic nursing skills as well. Very informative and very detailed. Glad that I bought it early to get a head start.
