Review
"Nahmias & Olsen's textbook has served our program well. However, the cost became too high. The reduced-cost version is an excellent move." --Chen Zhou, Georgia Institute of Technology

"This is the best operations management textbook I have ever seen in my 26-year academic career. Among its strengths are mathematical rigor, comprehensive coverage of all important topics, snapshots, and historical notes. Best of all, the price is very, very reasonable!" --Ching-Chung Kuo, University of North Texas

Good, but would not recommend to beginners.
By Mr.Right
I was looking for a book that would relate to a lot of the stuff I am learning in my program at school (Masters Degree). The book is very detailed which is good, but if you do not have a lot of experience with some of the formulas being used you might struggle. Not that I am a pro, but I have been around long enough to understand what the book is trying to teach. The book is ok. Its not bad, but its not great either. Some of the examples it uses could use more detail or better wording. Also, at the end of each chapter there are some test problems, but I could not find the answers anywhere in the book. The questions have a "CD" Image next to the questions, but I do not know if that means a disk should have come with the book. Bottom line. If this subject is new to you, then you may want to look into other books. I would only recommend this book to people at an intermediate level.

Something to note: The book came damaged with a cracked spine and a couple of other dents. That was a little disappointing since I was expecting a book wrapped in plastic that looks new and not used. I am going to return the book because of that. Regardless of the damage, my rating is based solely on the material of the book. But the time I had with it was enough to see how much of a rating I would give it. I am waiting for my other book to come in which is an Operations Management book (ISBN-13: 978-0078024108). I am hoping for a better layout in my new OM book. Especially since it cost a lot more ;)

If you have any good recommendations on other Ops Mgmt books, I would love to hear from you. Thanks for reading my review.

Good for what it does, bad for what it doesn't.
By David Schweitzer
I'm not yet through with this book in the course I am taking that uses it, so bear that in mind. Also bear in mind that I come from a mathematical background, not a management or industrial or systems engineering background. That said, this book is distinctly divided into two major areas:

1) What it does well
2) What it doesn't do well

Let's talk about what it doesn't do well. New in this edition are the inclusion of many qualitative ideas including risk factors involving a range of four terms from variation to chaos (something apparently new in the field), a guidance on methodologies for aggregate planning, the entirety of Chapter 7, among other things.

And for each of these things (we're currently on chapter 4 in class, but I've read through Chapter 10), nothing is explained in any concrete terms. It comes off as a lot of double speak to throw you around so the author can say "Hey we included this new material now we're the most comprehensive book out there!" You're given a rough explanation on something, shown no example on how someone might apply this knowledge, and then asked to explain things yourself. This was quite the issue in both the Variation-Chaos range of risk analysis (where the wording of each example you're supposed to match to one of the four terms was largely ambiguous) and when dealing with aggregate planning but considering "special cases," such as stock outs, demand backordered or lost, etc.

In some cases, you're meant to justify a point (like deciding if something is a variational risk or a planned risk), but the author gives no real indication that this is okay and treats it more as a binary idea (you're right or wrong so choose correctly). This is disconcerting since apparently, there actually IS a statistical difference in the differences in terms--meaning there are concrete differences in them, so there actually can be right or wrong answers. Considering this edition was copyrighted 2015, the BASIC paper defining these terms came out in the early 2000s, and significant research has been done to better elucidate those terms since then, this author could have done just a wee bit more research into how managers/researchers actually USE these terms.

But in the case of aggregate planning, the biggest offender comes into play. Engineering is a largely jargon-heavy field, where each textbook uses its own vocabulary, experienced professionals use theirs, and while there is much overlay, good textbooks accurately explain (sometimes just one sentence is necessary) what this jargon means.

This book does not. You are assumed to not only have some knowledge of manufacturing or production and the jargon associated, you are ALSO expected to have knowledge of financial measures you might not yet have. This is because the book talks about a few ideas as if you already knew them and then tells you to deal with said problem. A rough example is the book telling you that stock outs can be a major factor in aggregate planning because of some reason, so now here's a problem telling you to modify a previous problem but include a stock out.

Don't know what a stock out is? Don't know how you modify an existing problem to accurately reflect it? That's too bad. It's not a hard thing to do, but neither is adding 2 and 3 to get 5, but you still had to learn it somehow by counting two and then three more fingers on your hand when you were younger. Imagine if your teacher taught you how to add but assumed you already knew; here we have an operations book teaching operations analysis and assuming you have some operations analysis knowledge already. Bad idea.

Which leads to the other offender that isn't TOO bad but only because of my "good points" section coming up. There are very few examples illustrating how to do anything at all. The book is largely interested in the qualitative or descriptive explanations for why things are the way they are. From a math background, this is the engineering equivalent of "handwaving" that math text authors will use to skip several steps between examples or (worse) proofs. Normally (again, for my upcoming explanation), this isn't too bad. The problem is how VARIED the problems all are, requiring some precision in tinkering with the machinery, but you're only told the basics of what an idea is.

Imagine if someone detailed to you, very clearly, the steps in assembling a basic electronic circuit involving resistance, capacitance, inductance, and voltage. And then you were suddenly given a brief explanation for what a signal antenna does, and you were now asked to build one. Good luck! But that is what is done here frequently.

So now let's talk about the good points!

The examples this book does show, they are amazingly explained with almost every step fully detailed, and the problem types are varied enough for you that, when you solve them, you will wind up with many different tools under your belt to tackle just about any problem (provided of course you can handle them). In many cases, problems are solved through Excel than by hand, and this book doesn't just throw Excel at you--it teaches you how to work with Excel. You are told, very clearly, not only what to do, but WHY you need to do it according to the formulas or problem presentation, so you can accurately (and correctly) link your machinations to your actual thinking process (indeed, many students struggle seeing their professor quickly go through an example in Excel or on the computer when equations and examples are solved in the book step-by-step, or "by hand.").

In fact, this book is an excellent text on showing you how you ought to be setting up problems in Excel so you can learn really, REALLY good organizational skills in managing your worksheets. Except for books specifically dealing with Excel (like the Excel 2013 Bible), I don't think I've seen a book that better illustrates the organization good planners use when creating tables of information to use (and it all starts early on in Chapter 3's Aggregate Planning, so you get a lot of experience throughout the rest of the book, where many other books just throw in an Appendix saying "oh by the way you can use Excel here's how").

This, then, is the perfect marriage of thinking like a planner (working by hand or thought) and planning like a worker (putting numbers in a table and manipulating them to some extent).

There is also some obvious thought as to the flow of the book. You're taken from Step 1 of the planning procedure all the way to the Final Step of the production procedure in a way that, I think, accurately reflects the production plant's "mind," if it can have one. I've seen books that throw all the basics of all the steps at the beginning and use the latter half to discuss special situations. This book prefers to handle everything in a timely way. Need to learn how to deal with inventory? Done. What about inventory with uncertain demand? That's not 12 chapters away because it's "special," that comes logically right after. Considering how irritatingly many engineering books are written, especially one so focused on descriptive ideas rather than pure number crunching math, this is a welcome breath of fresh air.

It can be compared to the massive and commonly used Operations Research text by Winston, which is a typical student's introduction to linear programming, operations research, and program planning. That book is definitely the ideal introduction to a subject with how clearly examples are done, but the flow of topics seems... Off. Integer programming is formally taught way too late considering how frequently it gets mentioned in earlier chapters (mentioned for good reasons, meaning it would have been better included earlier).

But back to this, the flow is superb.

And finally, the math. The math is written just well enough to justify itself as a typical undergraduate engineering book. This is meant for the user, not the researcher, so theory is largely discarded in favor of explanations for the basis of the equation(s), as well as derivations of useful equations based on "initial equations" that come from said explanations. Most engineering textbooks are pure derivations whose explanations are reduced to simply "We're going to turn equation 1 into equation 2. Why? Just do it." The author clearly intends this book for a student to learn FIRST, not a worker who needs a reference first.

All in all, I plan on keeping this text, and I definitely recommend it, even if I don't give it 5 stars. There are just things it can do better, but this is certainly not a bad book at all.

* “A huge work of massive ambition.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred

It has been a year of change since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Her mother murdered, her father alaudanum addict, Gemma has relied on an unsuspected strength and has discovered an ability to travel to an enchanted world called the realms, where dark magic runs wild. Despite certain peril, Gemma has bound the magic to herself and forged unlikely new alliances. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test these bonds.

The Order—the mysterious group her mother was once part of—is grappling for control of the realms, as is the Rakshana. Spence's burned East Wing is being rebuilt, but why now? Gemma and her friends see Pippa, but she is not the same. And their friendship faces its gravest trial as Gemma must decide once and for all what role she is meant for.

CHAPTER ONE
March 1896
SPENCE ACADEMY FOR YOUNG LADIES

There is a particular circle of hell not mentioned in Dante's famous book. It is called comportment, and it exists in schools for young ladies across the empire. I do not know how it feels to be thrown into a lake of fire. I am sure it isn't pleasant. But I can say with all certainty that walking the length of a ballroom with a book upon one's head and a backboard strapped to one's back while imprisoned in a tight corset, layers of petticoats, and shoes that pinch is a form of torture even Mr. Alighieri would find too hideous to document in his Inferno.

"Let us keep our eyes trained toward heaven, girls," our headmistress, Mrs. Nightwing, pleads as we attempt our slow march across the floor, heads held high, arms out like ballerinas.

The loops of the backboard chafe the sides of my arms. The block of wood is unyielding, and I am forced to stand as stiff as the guards at Buckingham Palace. My neck aches with the effort. Come May, I shall make my debut a full year early, for it has been decided by all parties involved that at nearly seventeen I am ready and that it would do me good to have my season now. I shall wear beautiful gowns, attend lavish parties, and dance with handsome gentlemen--if I survive my training. At present, that outcome is very much in doubt.

Mrs. Nightwing paces the length of the ballroom. Her stiff skirts whisk-whisk across the floor as if to rebuke it for lying there. All the while she barks orders like Admiral Nelson himself. "Heads held high!
Do not smile, Miss Hawthorne! Serene, somber expressions! Empty your minds!"

I strain to keep my face a blank canvas. My spine aches. My left arm, held out to the side for what seems hours, trembles with the effort.

"And curtsy . . ."

Like falling souffles, we drop low, trying desperately not to lose our balance. Mrs. Nightwing does not give the order to rise. My legs shake with exhaustion. I cannot manage it. I stumble forward. The book tumbles from my head and lands on the floor with a resounding thud. We have done this four times, and four times I have failed in some fashion. Mrs. Nightwing's boots stop inches from my disgraced form.

"Miss Doyle, may I remind you that this is the court, and you are curtsying to your sovereign, not performing in the Folies Bergere?"

"Yes, Mrs. Nightwing," I say sheepishly.

It is hopeless. I shall never curtsy without falling. I shall lie sprawled upon the gleaming floors of Buckingham Palace like a disgraceful stain of a girl, my nose resting upon the boot of the Queen. I shall be the talk of the season, whispered about behind open fans. No doubt every man will avoid me like typhus.

"Miss Temple, perhaps you will demonstrate the proper curtsy for us?"

Without ado, Cecily Temple, She Who Can Do No Wrong, settles to the floor in a long, slow, graceful arc that seems to defy gravity. It is a thing of beauty. I am hideously jealous.

"Thank you, Miss Temple."

Yes, thank you, you little demon beast. May you marry a man who eats garlic with every meal.

"Now, let us--" Mrs. Nightwing is interrupted by loud banging. She closes her eyes tightly against the noise.

"Mrs. Nightwing," Elizabeth whines. "How can we possibly concentrate on our form with such a terrible racket coming from the East Wing?"

Mrs. Nightwing is in no humor for our complaining. She takes a deep breath and clasps her hands at her waist, her head held high.

"We shall carry on, like England herself. If she could withstand Cromwell, the Wars of the Roses, and the French, surely you may overlook a bit of hammering. Think how lovely the East Wing shall be
when it is completed. We shall try again--steady! All eyes are upon you! It won't do to scurry to
Her Majesty like a timid church mouse."

I often imagine what sort of position Nightwing might seek out were she not currently torturing us as headmistress of Spence Academy for Young Ladies. Dear Sirs, her letter might begin. I am writing to inquire about your advert for the position of Balloon Popper. I have a hatpin that will do the trick neatly and bring about the wails of small children everywhere. My former charges will attest to the fact that I rarely smile, never laugh, and can steal the joy from any room simply by entering and bestowing upon it my unique sense of utter gloom and despair. My references in this matter are impeccable. If you have not fallen into a state of deep melancholia simply by reading my letter, please respond to Mrs. Nightwing (I have a Christian name but no one ever has leave to use it) in care of Spence Academy for Young Ladies. If you cannot be troubled to find the address on your own, you are not trying your very best. Sincerely, Mrs. Nightwing.

"Miss Doyle! What is that insipid smile you're wearing? Have I said something that amuses you?" Mrs. Nightwing's admonishment brings a flush to my cheeks. The other girls giggle.

We glide across the floor, trying our best to ignore the hammering and the shouts. The noise isn't what distracts us. It is the knowledge that there are men here, one floor above us, that keeps us jittery and light.

"Perhaps we could see the progress they've made, Mrs. Nightwing? How extraordinary it must be," Felicity Worthington suggests with a sweetness bordering on pure syrup. Only Felicity would be so bold as to suggest this. She is too daring by half. She is also one of my only allies here at Spence.

"The workmen do not need girls underfoot, as they are already behind schedule," Mrs. Nightwing says. "Heads up, if you please! And--"

A loud bang sounds from above. The sudden noise makes us jump. Even Mrs. Nightwing lets out a "Merciful heavens!" Elizabeth, who is nothing more than a nervous condition disguised as a debutante, yelps and grabs hold of Cecily.

"Oh, Mrs. Nightwing!" Elizabeth cries.

We look to our headmistress hopefully.

Mrs. Nightwing exhales through disapproving lips. "Very well. We shall adjourn for the present. Let us take the air to restore the roses to our cheeks."

"Might we bring our paper and sketch the progress on the East Wing?" I suggest. "It would make a fine record."

Mrs. Nightwing favors me with a rare smile. "A most excellent suggestion, Miss Doyle. Very well, then. Gather your paper and pencils. I shall send Brigid with you. Don your coats. And walk, if you please."

We abandon our backboards along with our decorum, racing for the stairs and the promise of freedom, however temporary it may be.

"Walk!" Mrs. Nightwing shouts. When we cannot seem to heed her advice, she bellows after us that we are savages not fit for marriage. She adds that we shall be the shame of the school and something else besides, but we are down the first flight of stairs, and her words cannot touch us.

Roses and Thorns
By Kate Coombs
Well, I spent the first 3/4 of this book racked by horror movie syndrome: you know, when you're watching the girl go down the long, dark hall and reach for the doorknob, having split off from the rest of the group, and you're yelling, "Don't do it!" at the screen? Only in this case, I was yelling at Gemma not to trust all the wrong people and misuse the magic she holds. She does both, repeatedly, for hundreds of pages.

Yet Bray's point seems to be that it's hard to know what to do when you're a 17-year-old girl, let alone when you carry far too great a responsibility and everyone around you is clamoring for you to hand it over to them. So while Gemma naturally distrusts the authoritarian Order and the Rakshana, she is more conflicted about her supposed allies in the realms, particularly two--make that three--individuals who are not nearly as dead as they should be.

At the same time, Gemma and her friends are trying to figure out what to do about their oh-so-scripted futures, not to mention troubles with family members. And Gemma worries over her feelings for Kartik, who pulls away, then doesn't, then does, even as she tries to make sense of events in the Realms and the warnings she is receiving in visions.

It kind of reminds me of how Harry Potter and his friends spend the middle of the last book glumly hiding out and quarreling because they lack all kinds of important information--and simply because they're teenagers and really don't know what to do next.

The Sweet Far Thing is a long read, but it is incredibly well written and moves at a surprisingly fast clip. (Watch for some lovely metaphors tucked here and there in Bray's prose.)

As for the ending, I would normally object, but I think this story is clearly focused on Gemma's efforts to make good choices and know, truly know, who she is, rather than on a stereotypical happy ending. A key theme of The Sweet Far Thing is that Gemma feels she is all alone, in spite of her friendships and allies and family--a feeling that this book ultimately confirms, though Gemma does manage to make peace with that knowledge.

The most telling moment for me is when the gate of the Winterlands demands each girl's greatest fear and greatest wish. Gemma's wish is this: "I don't know! I don't know what I want, but I wish I did. And that is the truest answer I can give."

For my part, I wish it were easier for Gemma to untangle the deceit and confusion that buffet her like storm winds, but in the end, she and her friends do what all of us have to do--the best that they can under the circumstances. And yes, they save the world. Bravo, Libba Bray!

Disappointing
By Kindle Customer
Thankfully, this is over. I thought I would never get through this last installment of Gemma Doyle trilogy. Why, oh why does this book have to be so long? Take out 300-400 pages of unnecessary secondary characters and going nowhere plot lines, its 5 epilogues, and "The Sweet Far Thing" would be a reasonably decent book (I suppose). But alas, Bray chooses to ruin her own rather original series with this endless and bizarre last installment.

I've read quite a few reviews and know how many people are disappointed with the ending. I don't really mind where all the characters end up in this story, but I rather mind how and why they get there.

Gemma's books have never been about romance for me. The underlying idea of these books is women's independence, I get it. So I probably wouldn't have minded Kartik's sacrifice if it made any sense. For me, he dies because of Gemma's stupidity. Should she have done what she promised to do in the end of book 2 (divide the magic among the inhabitants of the realms), none of the events in the books would have happened. Thus his death is pointless in my opinion. In fact, the more I think of the details of Kartik's death, the less I understand what and why exactly happened to him. Basically, Gemma stabs the Tree releasing Winterlands' magic, Kartik sucks in this magic, then pours the magic into Gemma and then becomes a part of the Tree. WTH just happened? Why does he even have to do it? If the Tree doesn't have any more magic, how can it have this power to accept his sacrifice and why is it needed? If the Tree still holds on its evil power, how does Kartik's sacrifice change anything? Doesn't it mean that the Tree will continue its evil business in the Winterlands and will eventually corrupt Kartik the same way it did Eugenia? How is this a solution?

Now to Felicity and Pippa. Seriously, where does the gay issue come from? I have no objections to homosexuality being portrayed in YA literature, but it is handled very heavy-handedly by Bray in this book. First of all, there is no clue about this in the first two books - Felicity is caught kissing a gypsy man, Pippa dreams of a knight in shiny armor. This leads me to believe that this turn in the girls' relationship is an afterthought on Bray's part. Another issue here is that considering that Felicity is only 16 and a victim of sexual abuse, can we really be sure that her newly found sexual preference is a real one and not caused by the abuse? I just think Bray shouldn't have brought up this issue if she didn't have time to handle it responsibly and thoughtfully.

Lastly, "The Sweet Far Thing" is an unbearably long and convoluted tale that needs editing badly. First two books have a great balance of real and supernatural with a great women's independence message. This third book is unnecessarily full of numerous subplots, redundant scenes, and pages of feminist propaganda. I understand Bray wanted to give us her opinion on about every women's issue out there, but it doesn't translate into a good book.

Overall, a disappointing conclusion to an imaginative and original series. I don't necessarily regret reading the trilogy, but I will definitely not recommend it to anyone. Two stars only because I was able to finish it and it gives some kind of closure.

Disappointing
By Aindrila
I picked up the series on my sister's recommendation and thanked her too after the first two books. Then I started reading book 3 and kept reading it and reading it and reading it, hoping that may be the author will show the brilliance of the first two books. Alas! Some 800+ pages later, all I was left with was the feeling of being cheated of a really good and original story. My main issues with the book are:
1. Too long, repetitive and full of unnecessary sub-plots
2. Characters acting like caricatures of themselves from the first 2 books
3. Un-fulfilling ending that resolves nothing.

In short, stay away from this one.

The 4th edition of "CHMT" continues the trend, initiated with the 3rd edition, of encouraging the use of a numerically based, computational approach to solving convective heat and mass transfer problems. The book also continues its tradition of also providing classic problem solving approaches to this subject. This textbook presents a strong theoretical basis for convective heat and mass transfer by focusing on boundary layer theory. This new edition provides optional coverage of the software teaching tool TEXSTAN. This boundary layer computer program can be used to enhance the understanding of the relationship between the surface friction, heat, and mass transfer and their respective flow fields. TEXSTAN contains the data structure needed to describe and solve most convective problems encountered by senior and graduate level students. Other significant changes include: expanded chapter on convective heat transfer with body forces; reduced focus on heat exchanger theory; and completely rewritten chapters on mass transfer to include more engineering examples for both low and high transfer rates, to provide the student with more insight to a seemingly difficult subject.

Good as introduction, but less good as a reference book
By Jiri Vejrazka
The book explains the momentum, heat and mass transfer in a quite accessible form. It is well organized and the reader will find quite quickly, what (s)he needs. The book is very pedagogic. It is devoted to the heat transfer theory. Consequently, it contains only a few experimental correlations. I would recommend it for the undergraduate and graduate students. The people concerned with the industrial applications will need to accompany it by a handbook, which provides heat transfer correlations in specific cases.

A one stop resource for turning you Pi almost any kind of server
By David H
What a great little book. Whether it be turning your Raspberry Pi into a media centre, web server, streaming server or game server, this book provides concise instructions on how to do it and all in one resource.

Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Pi (much of which I skipped as I've set up a Pi with Raspbian several times), but there were some useful section about peripherals you can use with the Pi. Chapter 2 then dealt with networking (Wifi and LAN) but included a very useful section on Dynamic DNS allowing you to access your Pi from the outside world even if your IP address changes. Chapter 3 deals with configuring some extra features (some useful and needed for later chapters). These 3 chapters prepare you and the Pi for the chapters that follow.

Chapter 4 provides instruction on setting up a PHP webserver and database. I went a bit further than this and installed Wordpress onto the Pi and had it up and running perfectly! A file server is set up in chapter 5. Learning how to mount/remount drives was a great bit of information for me. Chapter 6 and 7 cover setting up a game server and Bitcoin pools and mining. Neither of which I have much interest in but they provided some useful background information on the topics. Chapter 8 covers streaming video. I didn't realise it was possible with a Pi. An ideal solution if you want something small in a remote location! Lastly, chapter 9 deals with setting up the Pi ad a media centre. Again, very useful chapter. The only thing missing from the Pi in this regard (not the book) is Netflix. Maybe one day!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Easy to follow. Concise instructions. And having the instructions all in one place is great. For me, this book is a keeper.

Read it to learn how to create a low cost server
By Ral
I would totally suggest this book for people initiating into the Raspberry scene, because it guides you line by line into how to configure the board, how the Linux Operative System works as well as pointing out the hardware limitations, those that could be circumvent with USB ad-ons. In simple words, this book could be described as the introductory offline tutorial to RasberryPi.

Other interesting topics mentioned inside this book are the Bitcoin mining, local/internet remote access, video game emulator and media streamer. Those are just starting points, but people acquiring this hardware already have the seed of curiosity, and this book will guide you through your initial steps.

On the black side, some Linux experience would be necessary to fully understand what the book is talking about, which might be a yellow flag for total newbies or someone that want it done, without knowing how it works. Apart from that, a deserved weekend lecture.

Raspberry Pi as your House Automation Center: Almost
By Robin T. Wernick
The area of server administration, design, and programming has been well explored over the past twenty years. This is the first book devoted to exploring this interesting area of application for the Raspberry Pi. I am currently exploring a number of uses for the Pi around the home and the information contained in this book goes a long way toward helping me make it a convenient center for 24/7 computer services. However, the book is an uncomfortably short 94 pages for the price.

Although this book's server information should be specific to Raspberry Pi's highly constrained package environment an entire chapter is devoted to mining Bit-coins. I consider this to be a gross violation of the book's title. In a book limited to only 94 pages of information, spending ten pages of this extremely limited space on this frivolous and unrewarding area is a travesty.

On the other hand, the author does address how to put a web server and a file server on the Pi. In addition he shows us an amazingly powerful 2-200 Terabyte Raid stack extension to the Pi worthy of a main system server.

A chapter is devoted to setting up a game server and several popular game installations are included. This information could be used to relieve the family's territorial fights over the desktop without forcing the purchase of a complete computer.

The chapter on streaming video provides a central location for building an inexpensive home security system. Conceivably the most valuable chapter in the book it allows the reader to consider using video feeds from a number of different sources. If the author had explored mixing video feeds for production or doing computer based video filtering this chapter would have been worth the price of the book alone. Unfortunately, these exercises are left for the reader to complete on his own. I'm currently designing a security system that can accomodate six cameras( including a crib monitor ) for a home automation system and this information gives me a good head start.

The last chapter in the book involves itself in setting up a media center. The Pi( B+ ) is well on its way by having an HDMI connector that talks directly to large screen monitors and TVs. I'm currently running a 20 ft connection to my TV from the back of the room and it works very well. Now all I have to do is to install the desired media center software and experiment with some of my favorite recordings.

If the book had been half the price, I would have given it five stars. I'm going to half to search the internet and do a lot more experimentation to get the complete house automation package working with the Pi at the center. You will have to do the same for your own personal project. But this book is a good start on building a 24/7 Pi server that we want to have as our household communications center.

Brian was involved in the Paya-Kuna New Testament translation project and studied linguistics and Bible translation principles with New Tribes Mission. Brian is now working to complete a new translation of the Scripture from the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

A must read translation of the Bible, the Word of God.
By Joyful Lady
I have numerous translations of the Bible. Never have I read a translation that I sense such a powerful anointing of God as I read. I have read and studied God's word for the past 42 years, and I find nothing in TPT that contradicts or opposes other translations such as KJV, NKJV, NLT, NIV, or others. This translation makes difficult passages clearer and easier to understand. It has been a tremendous blessing to me to have it. I am looking forward purchasing the remaining books as they are completed.

The Passion Translation based on the Aramaic Language
By Wade Howard
We love The Passion Translation! I was first interested in this translation after watching Brian Simmons on Sid Roth, and Brain shared how the Lord commissioned him to do this translation work. Well, that caught my attention! First, I downloaded "Luke and Acts" to my kindle to see if I liked it or not, and I liked it VERY MUCH! Why? Because many passages of scripture that I never understood were now understandable, and made perfect sense! I experienced this over and over again. I did not know that the Biblical Language of Jesus' day was Aramaic, and I have a Bachelor Degree in Theology! I was feeling kind of stupid when I learned that. In Bible Colleges, there is so much emphasis on the Greek language, and studies.

Anyway, the only thing that I wish Brian would have done is to translate more passages from the Aramaic, instead of the Greek, or Hebrew Matthew (for the book of Matthew). In other words, he wouldn't translate using the Aramaic, but he put the Aramaic in the notes. Many, many times I loved the Aramaic - and I wondered why he didn't use it in the translation? I'm sure he had his reasons. This is a little thing, and how I am glad he gave the Aramaic in the notes!

My wife and I have fallen in love with this translation, and my wife loves the small books/booklets in this collection. I, on the other hand, can't wait until he gets the whole New Testament done, and comes out with a leather bound N.T., and then the whole Bible. I hope that everyone will remember that all our Bibles, no matter what version we read, is a translation. My conclusion is that the English translations based upon the Greek alone are not the best, and that the translations from the Aramaic are more accurate, and understandable. Admittedly, Brian draws from both. Enjoy the Word of God in understandable English!

ORDER THIS TRANSLATION!!!
By LG
This translation of the Bible has breathed new life into me! It's like reading a love letter from God! I've gotten so much out of it I've bought the complete set currently available for other people to enjoy. It provides a fresh understanding of what the original Hebrew and Greek texts mean, and brings the scriptures down to where I live. I intend to buy every book of the Bible in this series as it is released. Awesome, wonderful translation!

Cardinal rule #1 for surviving school: Don't get noticed by the mean kids.
Cardinal rule #2 for surviving school: Seek out groups with similar interests and join them.
On her first day at her new school, Penelope--Peppi--Torres reminds herself of these basics. By shoving poor Jaime and running away!
Falling back on rule two and surrounding herself with new friends in the art club, Peppi still can't help feeling ashamed about the way she treated Jaime. And when the two clubs go to war, Peppi realizes that sometimes you have to break the rules to survive middle school!

From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—Flawed protagonist Peppi is fantastically imperfect in this middle school graphic novel. She is the new girl at Berrybrook Middle School and is having a hard time fitting in because of her struggles with social anxiety. The work opens with the young teen pushing away the first person who tries to help her, Jaime, and it only gets more awkward from there. A feud between Peppi's after-school art club and Jaime's science club springs up. Can the two groups stop fighting long enough to earn a spot in the school fair? Will Peppi overcome her social anxiety and apologize to Jaime? Will any of them feel comfortable enough in their own skins to have a good school year? The story is told with a clear, believable voice. Diversity is reflected in this average middle school setting, and there are characters from a variety of ethnicities and are differently abled. Chmakova is an adept storyteller and organically incorporates messages of kindness and understanding without being preachy. The placement of the text and images were carefully considered. The illustrations and lettering are playful, bright, and fun, in keeping with the tone of the work. Readers will connect with the relatable, complex characters. VERDICT A superb graphic novel that authentically depicts the naturally awkward adolescent years.—Julie Zimmerman, Brooklyn Public Library

Awkward is Awesome
By new mama
I bought this book for my 11 year old daughter and she loved it. I asked her to write a review and this is what she wrote. "Awkward is awesome! I'm in sixth grade and I've just started a new school, so I can totally relate to the beginning.I really love the story-line and the character growth between Penelope and Jamie. Also the relationship between the art club and the science club is so funny! So basically what I'm here to say is I love this book and recommend it to anyone who likes graphic novels with a bit of comedy!"

Great art and storytelling
By Vincent
'Awkward' revolves around two interwoven plot points about Penelope trying to help her Art Club get a spot in the school fair and her desire to apologize to the school mate she shoved, where she gets shy and embarrassed to every time she gets the opportunity. The opening seems like it'll lead to a romance, but there are only a hints of it in the story and when present it's very subtle with some aspects of innocence involved (they're all in middle school after all)

There's a great cast of characters with realistic yet cartoony aspects to them without going to deep into their respective stereotypes.

The book goes into middle school drama, and with real life personal problems as well especially with a character named Maribella. With how her story arc concluded, I would like to see her getting her own series about her exploits as I found her to be an interesting character.

The book is in full color and I like how the characters emote very well with their facial animations as it brings the art and world to life. This book is very character driven and brings out excellent interactions with a variety of different personalities. A very good page turner as I read all 200+ pages in one sitting.

Overall very good, fun filled middle school drama story. A good read for all ages.

If the author is reading this, please make a series on Maribella ;)

Graphic Novel Librarian's Review
By Laura B. Mehaffey
As a graphic novel librarian, I absolutely had to own this book. Not only is it written and drawn by a very talented author, but it's a great take on teen awkwardness that my patrons really need. This is destined to be on ALL the American Library Association booklists and win all sorts of awards. It's great for teens, tweens, and adults. It somehow managed to tell the story without succumbing to tropes and without talking down to the reader. It really made me feel like the author LIVED this situation and is telling us exactly how it felt, not how her editor told her to make it feel so it would sell better.

Peppi is a young girl who doesn't fit anywhere except her art club. Her first day of school she embarrasses herself and ends up hurting the feelings of the nerdiest kid in school. This boy, Jamie, ends up joining the art club's arch-rival the science club. As the club's duke it out in the halls, Peppi and Jamie duke it out on the emotional level, both learning to come out of their shells and save their beloved clubs from cancellation.

What else can I say? The art is beautiful. The characters are beautiful. The situation is beautiful. The humor is beautiful. Why are you still reading this when you could read the book?
