The Bible for Any Dialysis Patient
By N. D. Harmon
"The Handbook of Dialysis" is a must have for anyone who is a patient on dialysis or who is the caretaker of someone on dialysis. This book is written with a Nephrologist or Nephrology nurse in mind, but patients and caretakers can learn a great deal as well. It explains the whole dialysis process including reuse, vascular accesses, anticoagulation, nutrition, infections, sleep disorder, etc. The dialysis process affects one's whole system.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Hakata Soy, the space hero with dangerously spiky hair, is glad to be back at Astronaut Academy after a semester break. Trouble emerges when a creature that feeds on human emotion infiltrates the school. The resulting drama, including a ban on love, threatens to keep Hakata's Fireball team out of the championship. This mix of science fiction and humor has high appeal, deftly referencing manga, anime, and gaming conventions. There are adorable chibis, a bunny teacher, and a panda undercover agent, and Fireball games are depicted as video-game battles, the players in full, mecha-like armor. Bold cartoon-style illustrations nod to manga's spiky, stylized look while remaining unique. Full of action, humor, and engaging characters, this is a solid purchase.-Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Roman reenrolls his readers in Astronaut Academy, where the favorite equation is shojo plus Harry Potter equals clever, postmodern humor and surprisingly affecting romance. While the likes of Maribelle Mellonbelly, Tak Offsky, and Miyumi San can play MonChiChiMon cards with a rabbit space-ninja and a Spanish-speaking panda bear, the lovelorn Hakata Soy is recruited onto the academy’s Fireball team as they strive to finally win the championship. At the same time, however, a shape-shifting monster has stowed away and is eating everyone’s hearts, which proves pretty easy with everyone showing their affection by giving away one of their nine possible hearts left and right. Gags are packed into just about every panel, which makes for a fast-paced read. The zany tone works so well that the undercurrent of sincere longing and occasional romantic tragedy can sneak up on you. Roman’s art, meanwhile, has an undeniable manga style but with the soft lines and easy charm of old-fashioned comic strips. Sure to delight returning readers, though newcomers can come aboard with no trouble. Grades 4-6. --Jesse Karp

No space-school sophomore slump
By Erik N
The first book was a delight: charming, funny, surreal and all about a childhood experience that I would have loved (I hated school so much, and I'm guessing classes in space tumbling and games of fireball would have improved matters). The second book is equally charming, funny and surreal. Both books are told in short story snippets that add up into a story greater than the sum of its parts. Definitely buy both books, so that you can get more enjoyment out of visiting a school that has bear-ed up security (bears with fists that double as bazookas). Marvel at the poetic entrances of Team Feety-Pajamas (a very funny though affectionate riff on a certain Pokemon villain squad). And watch the students battle against tyranny when the school "bans love and cancels fun."

Seriously, folks, this is great for all ages. A great antidote to the grim-and-gritty world of comics that have forgotten fun. The art is unique, loose and cute as all get-out. The writing is sharp. And Senor Panda (still not extinct!) is the best Spanish teacher anyone could ask for.

The Drowned Muse: Casting the Unknown Woman Across the Tides of Modernity (Oxford Modern Languages and Literature Monographs), by Anne-Gae

The Drowned Muse is a study of the extraordinary destiny, in the history of European culture, of an object which could seem, at first glance, quite ordinary in the history of European culture. It tells the story of a mask, the cast of a young girl's face entitled "L'Inconnue de la Seine" (the Unknown Woman of the Seine), and its subsequent metamorphoses as a cultural figure. Legend has it that the "Inconnue" drowned herself in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century. The forensic scientist tending to her unidentified corpse at the Paris Morgue was supposedly so struck by her allure that he captured in plaster the contours of her face. This unknown girl, also called "The Mona Lisa of Suicide," has since become the object of an obsessive interest that started in the late 1890s, reached its peak in the 1930s, and continues to reverberate today.

Aby Warburg defines art history as "a ghost story for grown-ups." This study is simlarly "a ghost story for grown-ups," narrating the aura of a cultural object that crosses temporal, geographical, and linguistic frontiers. It views the "Inconnue" as a symptomatic expression of a modern world haunted by the earlier modernity of the nineteenth century. It also investigates how the mask's metamorphoses reflect major shifts in the cultural history of the last two centuries, approaching the "Iconnue" as an entry point to understand a phenomenon characteristic of 20th- and 21st-century modernity: the translatability of media. Doing so, this study mobilizes discourses surrounding the "Inconnue," casting them as points of negotiation through which we may consider the modern age.

Review
The Drowned Muse is the ifrst book-length study devoted entirely to the Inconnue. As well as providing an engaging history of the mask, Saliot situates the object as an emblem of modernity, ensuring that her book will be of interest beyond the field of twentieth-century French culture and literature. Sally Barnden, The Times Literary Supplement

About the Author

Anne-Gaelle Saliot is Assistant Professor at Duke University, where she teaches twentieth-century French literature and cinema. In 2011, she was awarded the Mellon Fellowship for her manuscript on the legacies of literature and on visual representations of the "Unknown Woman of the Seine." Her additional research interests include French theory of the image (Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Ranciere), literature and dance, film studies, and more especially the connections between filmmakers of the New Wave and the nineteenth century.

What a Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses, by Daniel Chamovitz

"Enough absorbing science to concede that plants continue to inspire and amaze us." ―The Wall Street Journal

How does a Venus flytrap know when to snap shut? Can it feel an insect's tiny, spindly legs? And how do cherry blossoms know when to bloom? Can they remember the weather?
For centuries we have marveled at plant diversity and form―from Charles Darwin's early fascination with stems to Seymour Krelborn's distorted doting in Little Shop of Horrors. But now, in What a Plant Knows, the renowned biologist Daniel Chamovitz presents an intriguing and scrupulous look at how plants themselves experience the world―from the colors they see to the schedules they keep. Highlighting the latest research in genetics and more, he takes us into the inner lives of plants and draws parallels with the human senses to reveal that we have much more in common with sunflowers and oak trees than we may realize. Chamovitz shows how plants know up from down, how they know when a neighbor has been infested by a group of hungry beetles, and whether they appreciate the Led Zeppelin you've been playing for them or if they're more partial to the melodic riffs of Bach. Covering touch, sound, smell, sight, and even memory, Chamovitz encourages us to consider whether plants might even be aware.
A rare inside look at what life is really like for the grass we walk on, the flowers we sniff, and the trees we climb, What a Plant Knows offers us a greater understanding of botany and science and our place in nature.

Review

“Of the dozens of books I read in 2012, several stand out. But there's one I keep coming back to, thumbing through it, letting people know about it. It's Daniel Chamovitz's What A Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses . . . It's incredibly interesting material, presented in an entertaining and fun way -- in about only 140 pages. What A Plant Knows is a nice fit on my shelf of gardening books -- and that's where it will stay. Although I've recommended the book to several people, I've ungraciously not let them borrow my copy. I fear I won't get it back.” ―Chicago Tribune

“The reader...will find enough absorbing science to concede that plants continue to inspire and amaze us. It's time, as Joni Mitchell sang at Woodstock, 'to get ourselves back to the garden' and take a closer look at plants.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“This elegantly written account of plant biology will change the way you see your garden...Chamovitz lets us see plants in a new light, one which reveals their true wonder.” ―The Guardian

“Thick with eccentric plant experiments and astonishing plant science.” ―Sunday Times (UK)

“Plants may be brainless, eyeless and devoid of senses as we know them, but they have a rudimentary 'awareness', says biologist Daniel Chamovitz. In this beautiful reframing of the botanical, he reveals the extent and kind of that awareness through a bumper crop of research.” ―Nature

“For everyone who has wondered at Mimosa, the suddenly snapping Venus flytrap or the way a sunflower's head unerringly turns to follow the sun, Daniel Chamovitz has written the perfect book.” ―American Scientist

“[A] fascinating inside look at what a plant's life is like, and a new lens on our own place in nature.” ―Maria Popova, Brain Pickings

“Verdict: Plant-astic.” ―Herald Sun (Australia)

“This well-researched book makes the compelling argument that plants "know" a lot more than most people give them credit for . . . Chamovitz eloquently elucidates that scientific evidence that proves it in easy-to-understand terms.” ―The American Gardener

“Chamovitz's book is pop science at its best, full of vivid examples of barely imaginable ways of living” ―BBC Wildlife

“In a lively and delightful discourse that aligns botany with human biology, [Chamovitz] articulates his findings, about plants and the senses in accessible, often whimsical observations that make complex science not only comprehensible but fun to ponder.” ―Booklist

“[A] handy guide to our own senses as well as those of plants.” ―Audubon

“An intriguing and scientific--but easy to read--look at how plants experience life.” ―Gardens Illustrated

“[Chamovitz] gently hints that we should have a greater appreciation of plants' complexity and perceptiveness . . . If plants can see, smell, feel, know where they are, and remember, then perhaps they do possess some kind of intelligence. Maybe that is worth reflecting on the next time you casually stroll past a plant.” ―Chelsie Eller, Science

“Like us, a plant that aspires to win the rat race must exploit its environment. Even a daffodil can detect when you're standing in its light, and a rhododendron knows when you're savaging its neighbor with the pruning shears. With deftness and clarity, Daniel Chamovitz introduces plants' equivalent of our senses, plus floral forms of memory and orientation. When you realize how much plants know, you may think twice before you bite them.” ―Hannah Holmes, author of Quirk and Suburban Safari

“Just as his groundbreaking research uncovered connections between the plant- and animal kingdoms, Daniel Chamovitz's insights in What a Plant Knows transcend the world of plants. This entertaining and educational book is filled with wondrous examples that underscore how the legacy of shared genomes enables plants and animals to respond to their environments. You'll see plants in a new light after reading What a Plant Knows.” ―Gloria M. Coruzzi, Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor, Center for Genomics and Systems Biology, New York University

“If you've ever marveled at how and why plants make the choices they do, What a Plant Knows holds your answer. Chamovitz is a master at translating the science of botany into the language of the layman.” ―Michael Malice, author, subject of Ego & Hubris, and succulent enthusiast

“Chamovitz walks the Homo sapiens reader right into the shoes--or I should say roots--of the plant world. After reading this book you will never again walk innocently past a plant or reach insensitively for a leaf. You will marvel and be haunted by a plant's sensory attributes and the shared genes between the plant and animals kingdoms.” ―Elisabeth Tova Bailey, author of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating

“What a Plant Knows is lively, eloquent, scientifically accurate, and easy to read. I commend this engaging text to all who wonder about life on earth and seek a compelling introduction to the lives of plants as revealed through centuries of careful scientific experimentation.” ―Professor Stephen D. Hopper, Director, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

“A fascinating book that explores accessibly the evidence that plants share more properties with animals than most people appreciate. It may come as a relief to vegetarians to learn that plants do not feel pain or suffer, in the human sense, when harvested. Nevertheless, after reading What a Plant Knows, we wanted to apologize to our daffodils for the times when our shadows have shielded them from the Sun.” ―John and Mary Gribbin, authors of The Flower Hunters

“By comparing human senses to the abilities of plants to adapt to their surroundings, the author provides a fascinating and logical explanation of how plants survive despite the inability to move from one site to another. Backed by new research on plant biology, this is an intriguing look at a plant's consciousness.” ―Kirkus

Interesting topic, informative, scientific, but sometimes hard to understand
By J. M. Lawniczak
Nonscientists with an interest in plants, such as gardening enthusiasts, should read this book. It appears to be very scientifically based, indeed the noted popular science magazine, Scientific American, is the publisher. The theme is how plants sense and respond to their environment. The book thus explores how plants "feel" light and respond to it. Also discussed is plants' reaction to touch, as well as other stimuli. The book can be understood by the nonscientist, though there are parts that became a little too technical for me. In addition, the organization is a bit off and sometimes chapters seem to end in what I thought should have been the middle of a discussion, leaving me waiting, in vain, for more.

This book works very well in the Kindle version. There are footnotes, but tapping takes the reader back and forth. A real plus on a tablet connected to the Internet is that several of the footnotes have direct links to You Tube videos that actually show a short video picture of the described event. What book can do that? For example, there is a picture of the American dodder weed plant growing into a tomato plant to feed on it. The video of the Venus fly trap closing in on a fly and then on a frog is also very worthwhile. On the other hand, some of the links have hyphens in them, probably as they were in the book form, and this means that the links don't work and you have to go to a website and type in the link directly.

All in all a very interesting book, with some minor flaws that led me to give it four instead of five stars.

The Beautifully Sophisticated Sensory Life of Plants
By Smith's Rock
What a Plant Knows is a rare and beautiful piece of science journalism. Author Daniel Chamovitz's writing threads a needle with an aperture so fine that it is only rarely successfully accomplished: in elegantly simple language that is accompanied by a gentle sense of humor and deep integrity, he guides the reader to a new door of knowledge in a fashion that guarantees one will step through it. And once he/she steps through it, the reader's appreciation of what a plant can sense and remember (yes, remember, in a very specific sense) will be irrevocably altered.

This is not a dry and dusty tome. Though the phrase "I read it in a single sitting" more commonly applies to fictional thrillers (e.g. The DaVinci Code), it's applicable occasionally in science writing, and it's applicable to What a Plant Knows. Chamovitz, is a natural born teacher. When the reader wants to know "How the heck does a plant know which way is up, and which way is down?", Chamovitz refuses to plop the final answer out in one paragraph, instead, teasing the reader along the actual historical pathway that elucidates what we now know. And in so doing, he brings the full beauty of any given aspect of plant biology into focus, but ALSO brings to light the beauty and power of science that is well done; science done by people with a careful but insatiable need to know; science done by people whose need to be accurate exceeds their desire to prove their own theory right.

Chamovitz has the startling belief that the unvarnished truth is more fascinating than hyperbole, and hence What a Plant Knows is completely absent the hype and goofiness of The Secret Lives of Plants. You won't, after reading this book, find yourself crooning your favorite songs to your tomato plants (plants, Chamovitz convincingly demonstrates, really are deaf). But despite the fact that Chamovitz eschews sensationalism, what he says about the sensory life of plants, and what a plant can "know" and "remember" (the author very carefully defines what he means by those terms) is indeed both fascinating and sensational.

The book is just plain fun. Besides getting to learn terrific words like statoliths (essential for a plant to know which way is up, which is down), Chamovitz ups the relevancy factor multiple notches by linking the knowledge he presents to the reader with real life applications. He, for example, lets us know just how it is that flower growers get boat loads of chrysanthemums to bloom just in time for Mother's Day. Growers of Northern California's inhalable cash crop use this knowledge in what they call their "light dep" (light deprivation) season.

Plants, front and center, are the rock stars of this fascinating book. But also in starring roles are the folks that quietly, carefully, and with determination, track down the truth about the way our world works: scientists. They look good in this book. And so does science. Chamovitz's gentle, firm, funny, exploration of what tricks that plants have up their sheaves is full of integrity and passion. Treat yourself to it.

You'll find yourself looking at your plants differently
By David Lee Heyman
As I was reading this book I couldn't help thinking back to my days in high school reading Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher. Both books are written with real science explained in a way that anyone can relate to and understand. In What a Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses, Daniel. Chamovitz goes over the basic senses we relate to as humans (sight, touch, taste, smell, etc) and shows us how plants use similar functions in different ways. He explains why plants grow towards the light. We learn how plants understand they have been turned upside down and ensure that their roots continue to grow downward while their stalk grows upward. Daniel Chamovitz explains these phenomenon using examples and language that anyone from a high school student to a grandparent can easily understand. This book will become a classic for high school biology classes. It could be the handbook for many biology teachers that want to teach their students through reenactments of early botanical experiments. I highly recommend this book and anxiously await future books from the author.

You will be so glad you bought this!
By Carol Wood
This wonderful book truly inspires gardeners and do-it-yourself landscapers. It is full of unusual, exciting, and achievable ideas for lawns, beds, pools, pavings, and more. The acknowledgements say that the wealth of photos and plans were submitted by many designers and then selected by Julie Messervy and her staff at JMMDS (Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio). Perhaps that partly explains the enormous variety of ideas in this book, but anyone familiar with Ms. Messervy’s work and her many other books will not be surprised to find so many kinds of beautiful ideas for designing outdoor spaces.

A few of the great design ideas in the book are things that I have heard of before—like the importance of focal points—but many others are new, tremendously helpful concepts to me, like the advisability of dividing your space into zones. I also love the way the design ideas cover a wide spectrum, from a dramatically unusual meditative labyrinth of sedum, riverstone, and raked earth to more traditional treatments of gates, walls, fences, etc.

The before and after pictures of the DIY backyard would inspire anyone, and I also particularly love the ideas for side yards, garages, and driveways, the “green ideas that work,” and above all, the way this book suggests things that I can actually achieve—building, creating, and maintaining my landscape on my own.

And now I’m totally inspired to have chickens for pest control!

And an avid interest in human sexuality, particularly when it comes to Cally. Erotic with a sci fi edge...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
Cally's father was a genius and when he died, he left three robots to help and care for his family. I thought this was going to be a futuristic book, but it's not. From everything I can tell, it's written in present day. The robots are Blue, Red, and Green (named according to their "skin" color). Cally's two other siblings are also genius' and work within the family company. Her older sister has been working on Chat sub-programs and inserted one of them within Blue. Something about that program has pushed him past his initial parameters and he's starting to take on human emotions and feelings and thought processes, although he hasn't told anyone else about that.

Cally resents the robots. They are simply reminders of her father and how much she misses him. She's always been the odd duck in the family (not an electronics genius) and she's done everything she can to help that image by partying and promiscuous activities. Blue comes to her rescue one lonely Saturday night when she can't get a date lined up and the batteries on her vibrator let her down. What he can do with his hands amazes her and she immediately begins to notice that something's different with him.

This book was Amanda's Top Off Tuesday book a couple of weeks ago and the whole premise is a bit bizarre, but I was intrigued and in the mood for something different, so I bought it. I was surprised by how much I really did enjoy the story. Cally is an outsider so she battles that "inferiority" by partying and a long string of lovers. She definitely sells herself short though because what she does with Blue is just as advanced as what her brother and sister do (yes, the scenes where they are getting his "equipment" set up are really HOT!) I loved Blue. He has all these new feelings and emotions, but at the heart of it all are his feelings for Cally. Long before the vibrator incident, he's been watching and observing her. He really understands her and her feelings/needs. He's sweet and endearing and there's a certain vulnerability to him because you can see how much he cares for Cally.

The premise is a bit bizarre, but I liked that about this book. It was a fabulous erotic romance with a bit of a sci fi edge that I really enjoyed. The sci fi twist takes the fictional part of it all to a whole new level. It was great for a couple hours of pure reading fun!

So Much Fun!
By Kathryn Hogan
Warning! Reading this book may cause Extreme Sexy Happenings in your life!

Love Machine is a gem. Specifically it is a diamond. Like a diamond, it is stunning in its simplicity. It's a rare find. It could easily become a girl's best friend, if said girl is going through a dry patch in the fornication-with-other-humans department but not in the I-have-a-vibrator-and-I'm-not-afraid-to-use-it department. And, like a diamond, if you give this to a woman (or, I suppose, a male robot), you are likely to get laid.

I absolutely loved Love Machine. The story of Cally falling for her manly servant robot is quick-witted, light-hearted, laugh-out-loud funny and generally a lot of fun. I finished this book super fast, which coincidentally, is the only negative thing about it: It's too short!

If you're looking for a rollicking good time that is definitely best enjoyed by yourself or a consenting adult companion, this is your book!

Fantastic Read
By LAS Reviewer
Cally Morgenstern lived in a her childhood home with her sister IIsa, brother Jonathan and three robots, Blue, Red and Green. Cally's dad Vincent created the robots as servants for them and when he died he left them in the care of his three children. Cally could care less about the robots and invested none of her time getting to know what made them tick. Her sister IIsa knew everything about the robots and created programs which she downloaded into them. All Cally worried about was her job and sex; she especially loved her vibrator and, of course, tormenting her siblings.

One day, Blue walked into Cally's room as she threw her vibrator across the room. The batteries were dead and so was her entertainment for the night. When Blue makes Cally an offer she can't refuse I knew this story was about to get very interesting.

This was an unusual story in that the object of her affection was a big blue robot that developed feelings for the main character. When he turned his fingers into a supersonic vibrator which almost made Cally pass out, this reader wished there was a big blue robot at her beck and call.

As I said, Love Machine was an unusual tale, it was sexy, unique, and a love story. It was interesting to watch Cally realize her fears and to come to grips with her love for Blue and Blue's love for her. This was a quick read but an enjoyable one.

Great Overview -- All Good Information, No Fluff
By Alex Woolfson
This is one of the best introductions I've ever read on making an independent feature film. It covers everything from writing the script to distribution in foreign markets and does so clearly, concisely, entertainingly and within 238 pages. As a film editor, I can say the chapter on editing basics is right on. The sections on money (both raising it and receiving it once your movie is distributed) are both eye-openers. It's a very realistic, honest source of information about making an independent feature.
As for criticism: Written in 1997, the book gives a pretty short shrift to DV, but it does admit that things will change. Also, it focuses primarily on features and not shorts. And at 230 pages, it's still just an introduction, but honestly, I can't think of a better introduction to give to a first time filmmaker -- who's either starting her first short or making that first feature.
Highest recommendation.

This is the best book available on independent filmmaking.
By A Customer
As an aspiring filmmaker, I've read more than twenty books on directing and producing independent films. Merritt's book is easily the best, most comprehensive, and most revealing of them all. He tells you everything you need to know to finance, write, produce, direct, and sell a movie. I especially love all of the great "underground" tips about how to get free film stock and equipment, how to avoid permits, how to choose the right people, and a non-nonsense guide to distributors. Eveything is here, from catering tips to bank loans to guaranteed foreign video sales. This book will save me thousands of dollars as I make my first feature-length movie. I highly recommend it, as opposed to or in addition to film school. (I went to film school for 4 years for $65,000 and I learned MUCH more practical, real world, current advice with this $20 book.)

The Best How-To Book On Indie Film
By A Customer
After "The Blair Witch Project" and similar success stories, I was looking for a good general book on film production that included all the real dope on how the best known people have made successful low-budget movies. I was amazed by how much clear, precise info "Film Production: The Complete Uncensored Guide to Independent Filmmaking" has, such as precise budgets, deal-negotiating tips, crew member roles, distribution company reviews, and on and on. I also liked the way the book is organized. It takes you from the script and raising the money all the way through all the details of pre-production, production, and editing to selling the movie, promoting, and beyond. It answered all my questions (from stupid to tough) along the way.
