Get in the mood for the tropics

Sit back and relax...This one takes you on an appetizing ride through all st Lucia has to offer. Well, maybe its is a bit aimed at the tourist attractions but that's what made it so good for me: you can actually experience everything in the book yourself without going through too much trouble. And when we returned home, we only needed to flick through the pages to get that relaxed caribbean glow again. Take this book together with the 'rough guide' and you'll both have the glamour and the practical.

A Great Coffee Table Book

The book has excellent content and wonderful color photos of St. Lucia, its people, culture, and geography. However, my sole complaint is that it is not laid out as well as it could be. It would be difficult to use this book as a real guide due to its lack of expansive "nitty-gritty" information such as exact locations, mileage, cost, etc. The book is instead an excellent casual read for someone curious about the island.

Nice arrangements and excellent memories

When I was young, there was a piano in the house (and several other instruments, but I did piano). Dad was an amateur musician, with lots of professional connections. Some big names visited the house, and there always seemed to be music going on. One of the sources that Dad enjoyed, and which was used as source material by guests at Christmas time, was Henry A. Simon's _A_Treasury_of_Christmas_Songs_and_Carols_. The echoes of superb performances of these pieces by gifted people made me want, in my stumbling way, to do half as well.
Dad and Mom still have the book. I found a used copy, bought it, and am enjoying it very, very much. The arrangements are faithful to my memories, still harmonious and fun. They are not so difficult that a rank amateur such as myself cannot learn them.
Thank you, Amazon, for making it possible for me to enjoy the songs Dad, his guests, and I used to play, and for this to happen without Dad having to give up his copy. We can play the music to each other over the phone and have a grand time.

A childhood treasure, rediscovered!

When I was a child, my school library had the hardcover copy of this book, and my sister and I checked it out EVERY year for over Christmas vacation. It is such a fabulous book, and finding out that it is (perhaps) available again is so wonderful. The book has carols from all over the world, and includes the sheet music, and short histories of many of the pieces. A fanatastic resource for anyone who loves Christmas music.

INTRODUCTION

Today our bodies are exposed to toxins from when we get up in the morning to when we go to sleep at night. They come in the form of chemicals, pesticides, hormones, and other pollutants, and can be found in our immediate surround-ings from paint, lotions, carpets, furniture, and even tap water. Although our bodies have a natural built-in detoxifier that helps expel these toxins, the increase in these substances, particularly in our foods, is putting a great burden on our health.

The buildup of toxins in our bodies can have lasting effects on our health, causing our immune systems to become weaker. Mineral deficiency makes the condition even worse; it can result in a variety of symptoms, including lack of energy, headaches, weight problems, allergies, mood swings, and insomnia. To detoxify efficiently, we need to give our bodies some assistance in eliminating these harmful substances. A detox plan can help with this.

What is a smoothie detox?

A smoothie detox can give the body the time it needs to flush out the backlog of toxins. During a short detox, the body is able to cleanse, purify, and rebuild itself. A longer detox (of more than a few days) can result in deep cleansing at the tissue level, where accumulated toxins and wastes have built up. True to the description on its back cover, this book remains a 'comprehensive' treatment of animation aesthetics--but comprehensive pertains primarily to the US--which Furniss (California Institute of the Arts) acknowledges--with occasional references to Canada and Europe. Covering history, alternatives, visuals, sound/structural design, limited animation, stop-motion and digital animation, censorship, audiences, representation, and abstract animation, the book provides a thorough overview suitable for nonspecialists because of its facile writing style and numerous illustrations. But to be truly comprehensive, this book should cover a broader geographical area. A serious shortcoming of this revised edition is the skimpy coverage of Asia's rich tradition. Though Japan merits a page or two, China and Korea each get a paragraph, India even less. For example, the author makes no mention of China's exquisite brush painting style, Korea's 'multimation' experiments, or the very recent accelerated growth of animation production in India, Korea, China, and parts of Southeast Asia. Only two of the 129 illustrations are Asia-oriented, both of the South Asian cooperative venture 'Meena' (initiated by UNICEF in association with Hanna-Barbera Cartoons), with not one word of explanation about it. I had taken a class on this subject with the author of the book and learned alot about the different kinds of animation. I highly recommend that that you watch some of the animation used as examples in book to get a better understanding of the topics discussed.

Knowledge of God and Self-Assessment

I did not know what to expect due to the title of this book by Dr. Brewer. Then I read the very positive "endorcements" by the many well-known writers, teachers and pastors. The book covers for the new, young and growing Christian a package of evangelical and fundamental Bible-based education. I was kind-of looking for a suggested "formula" at the end for a person to carefully assess/measure his or her "Spiritual Quotient." This book, to me, is Teaching Life's Issues Class 1 thru 101. Dr. Brewer, an excellent communicator, just might consider his next book on the same or simular topics and sujects and cover Class 201 thru the "End times".

Well rounded approach

Mark's got a nice book here. He decides to take on every controversial issue known to Christendom in one book, and somehow pulls it off.

What he does exactly right is the structure of the book. The first section lays a fairly clever foundation for approaching spiritual issues. He draws on the likes of Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences to say that there is a spiritual intelligence that simply helps people live life better. He then names the four pillars on which Christian decision making are made: Scripture, Reason, Wise Counsel, and the Holy Spirit. Then he dives into everything from homosexuality to war, politics and money, other religions and hell.

The only weakness of the book is that he has a fundamentally and unquestioned modernist approach to the Scriptures. He asserts that every passage has only one interpretation (p 50) and that the author's original intention can be discerned, which begs the obvious questions about who subdivides the text and whether or not any of us have only one intention in the things we communicate, much less whether or not literary genres like parables can be constrained to single meanings. Given the foundation, American evangelicals carry the day on most of the issues.

The strength of the book is the voice. Brewer writes from his own experience with nearly every subject in here, and you can tell he's a Pastor who cares about people and about intellectual honesty. In this world, that combination is painfully unique and eagerly welcomed. So on that front, whether you agree with his conclusions or not, this is exactly the kind of book you want to use for conversation fodder. Books should be pretentious enough to make some grand assertions, or else they're not worth reading. But this book does so without a combative edge. So if you want a beginning point for discussions, lectures, or small groups on social issues, this is the place to begin.

First, there is much information available online about R, but much of the R literature is quite advanced. In addition, PhD statisticians, which write much of the R documentation, have a tendency to use very specific vocabulary words to describe a method. For the later reasons, the learning curve for the powerful open source R can be quite gradual when considering learning on the Y axis and Time on the X axis.

This Introductory course provides an opportunity to understand a massive amount of R for computing statistics. It is written for beginners but actually provides very useful R tools. The book provides knowledge to quickly become proficient in R, which can be challenging. If you google R, you will find there is much information on the Internet about the process of importing data as an example. It appears that many struggle with the latter task. This task and more are explained in this introductory book in a logical step-wise process.

Personally, I believe R, which is free and powerful, should be a part of every engineering and scientific statistical course. Why? As a chemical engineer, I have used statistics to optimize processes. Since validated statistical software was not distributed, I did my work in Microsoft Excel, which I was familiar with and I was rushed, but wish I would have known about well developed and introductory R documentation. This Introductory book would have been quite helpful.

Also, I appreciate that Dr. Knell also suggests books for more complicated topics. I think most people, myself included, forget that our professors kindly lead our learning. As such, we did not have to review textbooks, etc. Although the Internet is useful in this process, one can still stumble upon a difficult read. Since Dr. Knell does such a good job with explaining Introductory R in easy to understand language, I believe his suggested books are probably effective for quick learning as well. As such, I plan to us the Internet to evaluate his suggested readings before I buy my own.

In fact the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) used R to evaluate part of the complicated relationship of heart toxicity and drugs[1]. The later is important because the FDA requires their regulated industries use "validated" statistical software packages. As such, FDA must have the opinion that R is appropriate data analysis software, which might calm some peoples fear about learning R.

Quote: "The limits of intra-subject day-to-day variability were calculated using R 2.12.0 (R Project for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria)."[1]

Finally, I also suggest scientist and engineers become more informed about "Linear Mixed Models," and R handles such models effectively.

An excellent introduction to the subject

As an R novice I am always on the look out for a good introduction. Knell's book provides a user friendly method of getting into the platform and a useful set of instructions for statistics in R and many visualization techniques. Perfect for the novice, students and those with R phobia. Certainly recommended.

The book to start with

If you are new to R, this is the book to start with. It covers basics, importing data, using the help files, R packages, graphs, record keeping, trouble shooting and basic programming, each with some examples. If you have questions, you can click on the link on the “how to use this book” section to author’s website and send the author an e-mail. You can count on his reply. Dr. Knell even offers to check my coding to help me solving one of my problems!
